Who will finish as Serie A top goalscorer?

The Serie A title race may be going as predicted, but the fight for the Capocannoniere crown is far more unpredictable.

After the first seven games in Serie A, everything is proceeding as predicted as far as the table is concerned. Juventus have played eight and won eight, have a 13+ goal difference, and has already opened up a six-point gap over Napoli in second place.

However, what isn’t quite going according to the script is the leading goalscorer. Cristiano Ronaldo has long been the odds-on favourite with punters who like to bet on football sites, but at this early stage of the season, he is a little off the pace.

'Ronaldo not irreplaceable in Juve attack...'

Vincenzo Iaquinta claims Mario Mandzukic, not Cristiano Ronaldo, is the ‘irreplaceable’ player in Juventus’ attack.

Juve signed Ronaldo with the clear intention of winning the Champions League, but Iaquinta – a striker himself who scored 40 goals for the Bianconeri – disagreed the No 7 was any more important than Mandzukic.

“This Juventus can win the Champions League,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Juventus win when Mandzukic scores

Mario Mandzukic starts for Juventus against Young Boys, and history suggests it’s a good omen for the Bianconeri if he scores.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri has gone for a 3-5-2 system against the Swiss champions, with Paulo Dybala partnering the Croatian up-front.

If Mandzukic finds the back of the net it would be his 39th goal for the Old Lady, and things tend to go in her favour when he scores.

The 32-year-old’s brace against Napoli was the 35th game in which he’s scored at least once, and Juve have won 34 of those matches.

Experience counts for Juventus

Napoli's naivety and a sprinkling of stardust from Cristiano Ronaldo made the difference for Juventus last night, writes Daryl Hammond.

Despite scoring three goals and a ludicrous sending off in the Champions League, it has been an inconspicuous start to life in Turin for Ronaldo by his standards.

While he found the net twice against Sassuolo his impact in previous games were yet to live up to that demanded of a €100m five-time Ballon D'or winner.

But he was not bought to see them over the line against Frosinone, Parma or Chievo. Ronaldo is at Juventus to make a difference in the big games, and so far he's one for one.
