Matuidi: ‘CR7 the world’s best’

Juventus' Blaise Matuidi calls Cristiano Ronaldo “the best player on the planet” but jokes “he gets to share the dressing room with a world champion…”

The midfielder helped France to lift the trophy in Moscow at the weekend, and when he gets back to Juventus he’ll be playing with CR7.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player on the planet, knowing that he will play with us is great,” Matuidi told Gazzetta dello Sport.

World Cup: Croatia can't stop France

Croatia dominated the World Cup Final for long periods, with Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic on target, but France won the trophy 4-2.

This was the first ever Final for Croatia, while Les Bleus hadn’t been here since losing to Italy in 2006 and star striker Kylian Mbappé was born the same year as their last victory in 1998.

Perisic shook off a thigh injury to start with Inter teammate Marcelo Brozovic, Juve’s Mandzukic and Milan full-back Ivan Strinic. Blaise Matuidi of Juve again played in a more advanced role.

Dortmund wanted Mandzukic

Borussia Dortmund saw their offer for Mario Mandzukic rejected outright by Juventus, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The report of their interest in the striker first emerged in German media with Focus.

However, the Bianconeri never even took it into consideration and assured Mandzukic is not for sale.

He has had a very impressive World Cup, helping his country reach the Final against France.

This also earned interest from the likes of Manchester United.

Mandzukic 'would be worth €200m'

Stefan Effenberg claims Mario Mandzukic is “one of the three best strikers in the world and would be worth €200m if he was younger.”

The 32-year-old Juventus forward has been instrumental in getting Croatia to their first ever World Cup Final, where they face France tomorrow in Moscow.

He has scored two goals and provided one assist, as well as putting in battling performances all over the field.

“I never understood why Bayern Munich sold him,” wrote ex-German international Effenberg on T-Online.

World Cup: Croatia thank Perisic-Mandzukic

Ivan Perisic cancelled out an England free kick and set up Mario Mandzukic’s extra time winner, as Croatia will face France in the World Cup Final.

This was a huge opportunity for both nations and a relatively unexpected one, as Croatia had reached the semi-final only once before in 1998, while England got there only in 1966 and 1990. Gareth Southgate kept the same line-up again, while Marcelo Brozovic stepped into the XI with Mario Mandzukic, Ivan Perisic and Ivan Strinic, plus Sime Vrsaljko recovered from injury.

Mandzukic-Darmian swap?

Juventus could propose Manchester United take Mario Mandzukic in part-exchange for Matteo Darmian, according to Sportitalia.

This would have to wait until after Croatia’s World Cup campaign has finished, but Mandzukic has hinted he could seek a move away.

He is increasingly frustrated at being used in a wide or even defensive role, whereas he’d relish a more central position at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old is a fan favourite for his work rate and determination since a €21m transfer from Atletico Madrid in 2015.
