Gasperini expects 'a much tighter Serie A'

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini doesn’t target the Scudetto and expects a ‘much tighter’ Serie A in 2020-21, claiming ‘the level has increased’.

La Dea finished third last term and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in their first season among the European elite.

The new season starts with an away trip to Torino on Saturday and Gasperini doesn’t want to talk about a proposed Scudetto battle.

The sky's the limit for Atalanta

La Dea have maintained the core of the side that drew plaudits both at home and abroad last season, and Owen Diana believes they can do even better in 2020-21.

The dawn of a new campaign is always exciting for any football fan, but that is especially true when your team has resided in dreamland for the last two years. Consecutive third-placed finishes and a trip to the Champions League quarter-finals were unprecedented for Atalanta, but they seem well placed to follow up those historic feats with further success in 2020-21. Finishing in the top four and reaching the knockout stages in Europe’s premier cup competition should be the minimum aim. However, a tilt at domestic and continental glory is not out of the question.

He made the perfect start to life in the Premier League, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Ilicic returning to Atalanta tomorrow?

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Josip Ilicic will return to the Atalanta training ground on Monday after six weeks in Slovenia dealing with a personal matter.

The creative midfielder missed practically all of their season after the lockdown, including the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini said only this week that Ilicic is “not currently part of the squad” and he didn’t know when the player would return.

Gasperini expects 'challenging start'

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini worries about ‘the lack of time’ ahead of the new Serie A season. ‘The start is really challenging’.

La Dea finished fourth in 2019-20 and are qualified for the Champions League for the second time in a row.

Gasperini’s men stunned in Europe last season, reaching the quarter-finals of the competition, but the coach fears the team will not have the required time to lay the groundwork ahead of 2020-21.

Gasperini: 'Atalanta want to grow stronger'

Gian Piero Gasperini confirms Aleksei Miranchuk is an alternative to Josip Ilicic, who is still absent, and warns Atalanta ‘cannot set targets like the Scudetto.’

La Dea finished third for two seasons running and reached the Champions League quarter-finals in their first attempt, so with players like Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Miranchuk and possibly Juventus-owned defender Cristian Romero coming in, they are getting increasingly ambitious.

No dishonour in Atalanta defeat

The Champions League quarter-final proved a step too far for Atalanta, writes Giancarlo Rinaldi, as the sheer wealth of PSG talent eventually made the difference.

Just to be writing this is an achievement in itself. Atalanta - the boys from Bergamo - came within a few minutes of the Champions League semi-final. Anybody who ever watched Italian football would rarely have thought they would be able to say those words.

Gasperini: 'Late PSG goals hurt Atalanta more'

Gian Piero Gasperini admits conceding two goals in stoppages ‘hurt more’ than PSG winning earlier, because Atalanta ‘got so close’ to the Champions League semi-finals.

The minnows from Bergamo were leading 1-0 until the 89th minute with a Mario Pasalic goal, but were visibly exhausted and down to 10 men in stoppages due to Remo Freuler’s injury.
