Gasperini expects 'a much tighter Serie A'

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini doesn’t target the Scudetto and expects a ‘much tighter’ Serie A in 2020-21, claiming ‘the level has increased’.

La Dea finished third last term and reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in their first season among the European elite.

The new season starts with an away trip to Torino on Saturday and Gasperini doesn’t want to talk about a proposed Scudetto battle.

The sky's the limit for Atalanta

La Dea have maintained the core of the side that drew plaudits both at home and abroad last season, and Owen Diana believes they can do even better in 2020-21.

The dawn of a new campaign is always exciting for any football fan, but that is especially true when your team has resided in dreamland for the last two years. Consecutive third-placed finishes and a trip to the Champions League quarter-finals were unprecedented for Atalanta, but they seem well placed to follow up those historic feats with further success in 2020-21. Finishing in the top four and reaching the knockout stages in Europe’s premier cup competition should be the minimum aim. However, a tilt at domestic and continental glory is not out of the question.

Ilicic is back training with Atalanta

Josip Ilicic has returned to the Atalanta training ground for the first time in almost two months, as the Slovenian FA confirm he is ‘getting professional help.’

The creative midfielder has not played since the 2-2 draw with Juventus on July 11, missing the last portion of the Serie A season and their Champions League quarter-final with PSG.

He returned home to Slovenia circa six weeks ago to deal with personal issues and has been suffering from depression.

Fans send support as Ilicic returns

Josip Ilicic returns to Atalanta today, after having sat out the end of 2019-20 to deal with a personal matter.

The Slovenia international decided to travel home during the summer as he was reportedly not in the right-mind to think about football towards the end of last term.

La Repubblica and La Gazzetta dello Sport hinted that Ilicic was suffering from depression, but he will rejoin the squad at Zingonia today.

Ilicic returning to Atalanta tomorrow?

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Josip Ilicic will return to the Atalanta training ground on Monday after six weeks in Slovenia dealing with a personal matter.

The creative midfielder missed practically all of their season after the lockdown, including the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Coach Gian Piero Gasperini said only this week that Ilicic is “not currently part of the squad” and he didn’t know when the player would return.

Miranchuk can fill Ilicic void

Atalanta have brought in Alexei Miranchuk from Lokomotiv Moscow for €14.5m and Vilizar Yakimov sees the 24-year-old forward as a potential heir to Josip Ilicic.

At first glance, classical music and sports don’t have much in common. However, the most passionate football followers know there is a special breed of player who make it seem that those two completely independent arts were made for each other.

Gasperini: 'Atalanta want to grow stronger'

Gian Piero Gasperini confirms Aleksei Miranchuk is an alternative to Josip Ilicic, who is still absent, and warns Atalanta ‘cannot set targets like the Scudetto.’

La Dea finished third for two seasons running and reached the Champions League quarter-finals in their first attempt, so with players like Lokomotiv Moscow midfielder Miranchuk and possibly Juventus-owned defender Cristian Romero coming in, they are getting increasingly ambitious.

Percassi: 'I'll call Ilicic before and after'

Atalanta patron Antonio Percassi says he will call Josip Ilicic ‘before and after’ the clash with Paris Saint-Germain, thinks goalkeeper Marco Sportiello could get an ‘important opportunity’ and hails Papu Gomez as the ‘perfect captain’.

La Dea’s biggest match of the year is right around the corner and PSG are waiting in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

But the hero from the meeting with Valencia in the last 16, Ilicic, will not be there.

Gasp hopes to have Ilicic back for next season

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini hopes to have Josip Ilicic back for next season and thinks La Dea can only continue to fight at the top of Serie A with some improvements to the squad.

Ilicic has reportedly returned to Slovenia, as he’s going through a difficult time and Gasperini must cope without the attacker when La Dea enter the Champions League Final eight tournament.
