Miranda nears Inter renewal

Inter defender Joao Miranda is reportedly set to sign a new two-year contract at the club.

The 33-year-old is poised to extend his stay at San Siro by another two years, having joined from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

The Brazilian centre-back played an influential role in helping the Nerazzurri return to the Champions League last season, making 31 Serie A appearances.

And despite his advancing years, he is set to be rewarded with a new deal.

Miranda: 'Italy-style Brazil'

Inter defender Joao Miranda credits Italian football with Brazil’s newfound solidity. “We learned a lot from Serie A about defending.”

The Selecao have swept through to the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and will face Dries Mertens’ Belgium on Friday July 6.

Wearing the captain’s armband against Serbia, Inter man Joao Miranda is a rock in Brazil’s defence, writes Daryl Hammond.

The centre-back had previous failed attempts at European club football when young, but found his confidence at Atletico Madrid and went from strength to strength at Inter.

Brazil have always struggled at the back and the 7-1 World Cup defeat on home soil hammered home the need to change that.

World Cup: Late flurry spares Brazil

Two late goals from Philippe Coutinho and Neymar spared Brazil as they beat Costa Rica 2-0 in the World Cup on Friday.

Roma’s Alisson kept goal for Brazil again, but Juventus winger Douglas Costa was only a substitute for the second game running, while Bologna stopper Giancarlo Gonzalez was at the heart of Costa Rica’s defence.

World Cup: Swiss neutralise Selecao

Brazil were made to pay for slack defending and sluggish finishing, as Switzerland neutralised them after Philippe Coutinho’s stunning opener.

With Argentina drawing, Germany losing and France stuttering to a victory over Australia, it was up to the Seleçao to make their debut in this tournament, but ran into many of the same problems.

There were several Serie A faces on show, including Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Inter defender Joao Miranda, Milan full-back Ricardo Rodriguez, plus Udinese’s Valon Behrami and Blerim Dzemaili of Bologna.

Inter knock back Skriniar bid

Barcelona are reportedly back in for Milan Skriniar, but Inter have made it clear the centre-back isn’t for sale.

The Slovakian international is wanted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but said yesterday that he wouldn’t leave the Nerazzurri this summer.

According to calciomercato.com his words were not random, as the Beneamata have recently made it clear to Barça that Skriniar is not for sale.

Inter and Sassuolo have named their squads for tomorrow evening’s Serie A encounter, including the return of Joao Miranda.

Spalletti: ‘Sassuolo a semi-final’

Inter Coach Luciano Spalletti assures his squad are totally focused on Sassuolo - “it’s like a semi-final for us”.

The Nerazzurri face Lazio on the final day in what could be a Champions League play-off, but for that game to matter they’ll have to beat the Neroverdi tomorrow.

“I’ve seen the players training in the right way, and that’s a sign that their focus is only on this match,” Spalletti insisted in his pre-match Press conference.

Miranda back in Inter training

Miranda trained with Inter today, indicating that the defender could be available for Saturday’s Sassuolo game.

The Brazilian was injured in the warm-up against Udinese on Sunday, but scans showed that his adductor injury wasn’t serious.

Now Sky is reporting that Miranda trained with the rest of the team at Appiano Gentile today, so he should be available to face the Neroverdi.

Nothing serious for Miranda

Inter have confirmed that scans on Miranda “didn’t detect anything serious”, with the centre-back only struggling with tightness in his adductor muscles.

The defender pulled out in the warm-up ahead of Sunday’s win over Udinese, and had scans this morning.

However, his injury is nothing serious, so he should at the very latest be available for the final day showdown with Lazio in Rome.
