Italia 90 mascot made in LEGO

Italia '90 ranks as arguably the most iconic World Cup of them all and the mascot from that tournament has been recreated in LEGO form.

Whether it’s Luciano Pavarotti belting out Nessun Dorma, Roger Milla celebrating by the corner flag or Paul Gascoigne bursting into tears, Italia 90 lives long in the memory of anyone old enough to have lived through it. As spotted by Brick Fanatics, LEGO builder Chris Smith has created the competition’s mascot Ciao out of blocks.

Baggio: ‘Juventus still ahead’

Roberto Baggio believes Juventus “are still ahead” of the chasing pack but “Napoli are doing really well”.

The Partenopei moved back to within a point of the Old Lady after the weekend’s results, with a head-to-head clash in Turin to come at the end of next month.

“I haven’t been to the stadium for a long time, but I still watch a lot on TV,” Baggio said as he attended an event to celebrate Vicenza’s 116th anniversary.

Baggio: The Divine Ponytail

Roberto Baggio is one of the greatest football players of all time, but we never saw him at full fitness and are fortunate we got to enjoy him at all.

Words: Greg Murray

It is perhaps one of football’s great injustices that Il Divin Codino is best known globally for his penalty miss in the Final of the 1994 World Cup against Brazil. For fans of Serie A, Baggio is recognised as the best of his generation, despite a career that was blighted by injury and clashes with his Coaches.

Roberto Baggio's Top 5 Goals

Today is Roberto Baggio’s 51st birthday, so Football Italia has put together his top five goals - or, at least, five of his best.

Napoli vs Fiorentina, September 17 1989

The Divine Ponytail had already established a name for himself across four seasons with Fiorentina, and the 1989-90 season would prove to be his last for the Viola.

In the summer of 1990, Juventus broke the world transfer record to take the young Baggio to Turin, causing mass protests in Florence.

It had to be Bernardeschi...

The stage was set for Federico Bernardeschi's return to the Stadio Franchi, writes Emmet Gates, and Juventus breezed round obstacles to beat Fiorentina.

It had to be him, didn’t it? All the talk going into Friday night’s clash centered around Federico Bernardeschi.

How vociferous would the Viola faithful be on his first return back to the arena where they once idolised him? Would he receive the Roberto Baggio circa 1991 treatment? And furthermore, how would the 23-year-old handle the pressure of the whistles that would be rained down upon him?

Vicenza players on strike

Vicenza Calcio are on the verge of bankruptcy after their players went on strike due to unpaid wages and a Press conference is planned.

It’s an ignominious end to a once-great club, which included in its ranks the likes of Paolo Rossi and Roberto Baggio.

The Lanerossi finished second in the 1972-73 Serie A season, while under Coach Francesco Guidolin they won the Coppa Italia in 1997, then reached the Cup Winners’ Cup semi-finals.

Vicenza are currently in Serie C/Lega Pro and their players have not been paid since September.

Borja Valero versus the Viola

Tears could be shed when Borja Valero visits his beloved Fiorentina, but there can never be bitterness for the Mayor of Florence, writes Giancarlo Rinaldi.

Roberto Baggio could not bring himself to take a penalty, while Manuel Rui Costa always seemed to play a little below his own immense standards. And Gabriel Batistuta, of course, burst into tears when he scored a goal. Playing against Fiorentina, for any former Viola legend, can do strange things to a man.

Pirlo: the legend who almost wasn't

As the football world stands to applaud Andrea Pirlo on his retirement, Emmet Gates points out this legend of the sport almost fell through the cracks.

Time waits for no man, not even for one as nonchalantly exquisite as Andrea Pirlo. Following his announcement that he had played his last match as New York FC got eliminated from the MLS play-offs by Columbus Crew, the tributes poured in.

Legends of the game, ranging from Zinedine Zidane and Fabio Cannavaro to Gigi Buffon and Kaka, all posted messages on social media, toasting to a legendary career. European aristocrats, such as Pirlo’s former clubs Juventus and Milan to Bayern Munich, did likewise.

Farewell, Maestro Pirlo

Andrea Pirlo stood out above all others because he never put himself above all others, argues Andrea Tallarita.

You will never understand Andrea Pirlo, the latest of the Italian World Cup winners in 2006 to hang his boots, if you see him as anything but part of a greater whole.

The former Inter, Milan and Juventus midfielder played after an idea of football that was entirely based on being part of a team. He was a director of play, a student of opportunity, someone whose brilliance emerged by extracting the brilliance out of his fellow teammates.

The former Parma, Cagliari, Napoli and Chelsea star spoke to UEFA.com and chose the characteristics that would make up his ideal Number 10.

“I’ll take Zidane’s right foot, which just about takes it over Roberto Baggio. I’ll take Maradona’s left foot, because Maradona… is Maradona.
