Pioli open letter to Fiorentina fans

Stefano Pioli has written an open letter to Fiorentina fans explaining his resignation. “With heavy heart, I am forced to leave because my professional and above all human capabilities were questioned.”

The Coach walked away after feeling the club no longer had faith in him, following a series of poor results culminating in Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat to Frosinone.

Cagliari and Fiorentina fund Astori charity

Cagliari and Fiorentina have announced they are creating a five-a-side football pitch in Bethlehem for all children to come together in the name of Davide Astori.

The defender died a year ago at the age of 31 of an undiagnosed cardiac irregularity.

These two clubs are where he spent most of his career and they play each other on Friday evening.

In his honour, it was announced today that Cagliari and Fiorentina will combine their efforts to set up a five-a-side football pitch in Bethlehem alongside the Friendship and Peace Playground.

Medics ignored Astori signs

Another two doctors who did medicals on Fiorentina captain Davide Astori in 2014 and 2017 are accused of negligence after failing to spot his heart problems.

The defender died suddenly in his sleep in the Fiorentina team hotel in Udine the night before a game in March 2018.

Many have asked how it was possible that a professional football player who was checked regularly could have such a serious undiagnosed condition?

Atalanta overturn Fiorentina in new thriller

Luis Muriel opened the scoring within three minutes, but Atalanta fought back for a 3-1 victory over Fiorentina, another hugely enjoyable and emotional match.

These teams played a ludicrously entertaining 3-3 Coppa Italia semi-final thriller only three days ago, but found themselves facing off again with a top six Serie A position up for grabs. The Orobici had not beaten Fiorentina in Serie A since April 2012, managing only four draws and nine defeats. This result also terminated the Viola’s nine-round unbeaten away streak.

Garcia: 'Astori would be great Coach'

Rudi Garcia believes Davide Astori “would certainly have become a great Coach” in a future the Fiorentina captain never got to experience.

Tomorrow marks one year since the defender died in his sleep in the team hotel in Udine, so all weekend Serie A games will halt at the 13th minute to remember DA13.

“It’s still difficult for me to talk about him in the past tense, as I feel like he’s here with us,” former Roma boss Garcia told the Corriere Fiorentino newspaper.
