Pioli: 'Hope Astori proud of Fiorentina'

Stefano Pioli felt Fiorentina “deserved to win” in their 1-1 draw with Udinese and the day was overshadowed by Davide Astori’s memory.

Edimilson Fernandes got the equaliser after the Viola were caught by a classic counter-attack on their own corner kick.

“We didn’t deal with the set play situations well. We knew Udinese would’ve created problems from those moves, but we still weren’t dynamic enough in our reactions,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Fiorentina: 'Astori always with us'

Fiorentina director Giancarlo Antognoni and Coach Stefano Pioli remember Davide Astori on their return to Udine. “He is always with us.”

On March 4, 2018, the Viola captain did not wake up in his hotel room the morning of the Serie A game against Udinese.

“The trip to Udinese will never be like the other games,” confessed director Antognoni on Sky Sport Italia.

“Having said that, Davide is always with us and we will always remember him, no matter where we are.”

Stadio dedicate song to Astori

Italian band Stadio have announced they are writing a song for Fiorentina captain Davide Astori. “He really was a good man.”

The defender died in his sleep on March 4 2018, in the team hotel the night before a Serie A match against Udinese.

“The memory of Astori still moves me, as he really was a good man who knew how to unite people and was fundamental in a group of young players,” revealed Stadio songwriter Gaetano Curreri.

“I felt the need to get that pain out of me and that is also what songs are for.”

On this day: Davide Astori turns 32

Monday marks the first birthday of former Fiorentina, Cagliari and Italy defender Davide Astori since his tragic death last year.

Astori, who would have turned 32, died in his sleep while in Fiorentina’ team hotel the night before their Serie A match against Udinese on March 4.

He was only 31 years old at the time of his passing and multiple tests are still struggling to explain what happened.

Astori hearing on Thursday

Two doctors have been summoned to attend a hearing on Thursday in relation to the death of Davide Astori, news agency ANSA reports.

The Fiorentina captain passed away in March, suffering a heart attack in his sleep ahead of a game with Udinese.

While no foul play is suspected, an investigation was carried out to determine whether his death was preventable.

Could Astori have been saved?

Tests allegedly show former Fiorentina defender Davide Astori had extra heartbeats less than a year before his tragic death in March.

According to La Nazione, Astori took two electrocardiograms in July 2016 and July 2017 so he could be declared fit to play football.

However, both ‘highlighted ventricular extrasystoles’, while the second test showed ‘an extrasystole with two morphologies’, described as ‘a small clue that his heart didn’t work as it should have’.

Sau: 'Impossible game'

Sirigu: ‘I think of Astori every day’

Torino goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu still thinks about Davide Astori “every day” - “we grew up together”.

The Fiorentina captain tragically passed away earlier this year, found dead in his bed ahead of an away game at Udinese.

His death and that of Emiliano Mondonico took their toll on the Granata goalkeeper, as they were all together at the start of his career.

“It’s like a punch, one which wakes you up and at the same time puts you to sleep,” Sirigu told Corriere della Sera.
