Can Napoli get Real?

The Partenopei are on the rise, writes Andrea Tallarita, but playing Real Madrid presents two new problems.

Napoli are surging. They've gone the last 13 matches undefeated, they recently ravaged Bologna 7-1, and former sub Dries Mertens is playing arguably better than any other striker in Serie A. Surely, if there's a good time to play Champions League juggernauts Real Madrid, then that time is now?

The question of whether the Partenopei are ready to take on Real Madrid is surprisingly layered. A comparison of the two teams' performances in their domestic leagues turns up unexpected numbers, as the Italian club actually have better stats overall.

Pavoletti joins Champions League squad

Napoli have added Leonardo Pavoletti to their Champions League squad, but there’s still no room for Lorenzo Tonelli.

The Partenopei released the updated list of eligible players to UEFA after the January transfer window.

Ex-Genoa centre-forward Pavoletti is a new addition, replacing Manolo Gabbiadini following the move to Southampton.

Roberto Insigne, younger brother of star striker Lorenzo, also drops out as he has been loaned to Latina.

However, there is still no room for defender Tonelli.

Sarri: ‘Won’t settle for second’

Napoli Coach Maurizio Sarri won’t settle for second-place - “if I settled I’d still be in Serie C”.

Napoli need to spend

Napoli have Leonardo Pavoletti, but require more reinforcements to achieve their aims this season, writes Richard Thomas.

Given the circumstances, the first half of Napoli's season can be considered a success. Despite the damaging loss of the talismanic Gonzalo Higuain back in August, Maurizio Sarri's team lie third in the Serie A table and are the leading scorers in Italy's top flight. They were also able to secure Champions League progress from a tough group, with a Round of 16 meeting with Real Madrid now awaiting on the horizon.
