Report: Abate rejects Sporting

Former Milan and Italy right-back Ignazio Abate has reportedly rejected an offer to join Sporting CP.

Abate remains a free agent after Milan chose not to extend his contract over the summer.

Gazzetta dello Sport’s Nicolo Schira claims the 32-year-old recently received a proposal football from Sporting.

The Portuguese side are in need of a new right-sided defender after selling Thierry Correia to Valencia.

However, Schira writes Abate knocked back the offer as he deemed it too low.

Abate and Mandzukic reject Qatar

Both Mario Mandzukic and Ignazio Abate have reportedly turned down a move to Qatar for Al-Gharafa SC.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport transfer expert Nicolò Schira, Mandzukic opted to remain at Juventus and wait for another proposal in January.

Now former Milan full-back Abate has rejected a contract worth €2.2m per season.

He is waiting for a more intriguing project to present itself, as he wishes to continue his career at the top level.

Abate considering Brescia bid

Former Milan right-back Ignazio Abate is leaning towards Brescia after turning down Olympiakos, Real Valladolid and an offer from Qatar.

According to Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà, the 32-year-old free agent is eager to remain in Italy.

He rejected proposals from Greek side Olympiakos, Spaniards Real Valladolid and an unspecified club from Qatar.

Abate is believed to be considering Brescia, which would see him reunite with ex-Milan teammate Mario Balotelli.

Abate: Felt like a stranger!

Ignazio Abate has tipped Milan to bounce back and remembered how their Chinese owners made him ‘feel like a stranger in my own home’.

Milan were taken over by Chinese businessman Li Yonghong in 2017, amidst much fanfare as he oversaw a recruitment drive of over €200m that summer.

However, it soon emerged that Li had borrowed €303m to buy the Rossoneri, and he ended up defaulting on the loan.

Lecce swoop for Abate

Lecce could make former Milan and Italy right-back Ignazio Abate their first signing of the summer.

Gianluca Di Marzio’s website reports Lecce have opened talks with Abate and that they are ongoing.

The 32-year-old will become a free agent once his Milan contract expires on June 30.

He played 306 times for the Rossoneri, winning a Scudetto in 2011.

The Apulian side, for their part, are preparing for a season back in Serie A after seven years away.

Milan prepare squad clear-out

Milan are set for a summer selling spree to cut costs, including Diego Laxalt, Samu Castillejo, Hakan Calhanoglu, Andrea Bertolacci and more.

CEO Ivan Gazidis made it clear he is making sweeping changes to the squad, slicing the wage bill and balancing the books.

Some decisions have already been made, as Ignazio Abate, Cristian Zapata, Jose Mauri, Riccardo Montolivo and Andrea Bertolacci have been simply let go at the end of their contracts.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Calhanoglu is on the market along with Laxalt and Castillejo.

Abate: 'Dream was to end at Milan'

Ignazio Abate wrote an emotional goodbye to fans after 10 years at San Siro. “Everyone knows it would’ve been my dream to end my career with Milan.”

The 32-year-old full-back has played his final game in the Rossoneri jersey, as the club decided not to offer him a new contract.

“If I think back to the first time I wore these colours, I still get emotional…” wrote Abate on Instagram.

Abate: 'Milan are still fourth'

Ignazio Abate feels Milan’s recent dip in form is down to “mental strength” and they must do well against Juventus, but also reminds fans they’re in fourth place.

The Rossoneri have picked up just one point from the last three rounds and if Atalanta beat Bologna this evening, the gap from fourth to fifth will be only one point.

“There are eight rounds to the end of the season and we must try to pick up as many points as possible to achieve our objective,” the full-back told Milan TV.
