Sergej Milinkovic-Savic insists Lazio “have the quality” to qualify for the Champions League as he targets a top-four finish with the Biancocelesti.

Lazio are currently third in Serie A after a run of seven matches unbeaten in the League, and Milinkovic-Savic believes this could be the year they finally return to Europe’s elite club competition.

“We have started to play well, with four straight wins in the League,” the midfielder said from Serbia’s training camp.

Short and long term Inter

Football Italia’s Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks at Inter’s recent issues and asks, do they look short term or long term with their strategy?

Antonio Conte is not backwards about coming forwards. Should an issue be in front of him, the Inter Coach will speak out with as much gusto as he has in him. His combative style is similar to his playing days and often gets results.

No substitute for squad depth

Game management and having options off the bench proved decisive in the Europa League for Lazio and Roma, writes Sam Wilson.

Squad rotation is essential in the Europa League, as Lazio turned the game with Rennes around thanks to options off the bench, whereas injury-hit Roma lacked alternatives against Wolfsberg.

Lazio had a game of two halves against Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais. Simone Inzaghi elected to start with a relatively half-strength side and the absences of key creators Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto were felt for most the game, the Biancocelesti failing to create any real scoring opportunities before the duo entered the fray.

Milinkovic-Savic: 'I didn't change the game'

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic refused to take credit for changing the game as Lazio fought back to beat Rennes 2-1 in the Europa League.

He came off the bench, scored the equaliser and provided the assist for Ciro Immobile’s headed winner at the Stadio Olimpico.

“I didn’t change the game, it was the whole team that raised the tempo. The first half was not the performance we wanted, but we won and can now prepare for Celtic,” the midfielder told Sky Sport Italia.

Tare: Why I rejected Milan...

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has confessed that he rejected Milan over the summer. “I chose with my heart, not money.”

Tare was Milan’s first choice to replace Leonardo, but the Albanian ended up sticking with Lazio and the Rossoneri went for ex-Roma executive Ricky Massara.

“I’m in a hurry to reach the Champions League,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“The group knows that in the last three years, we could’ve easily qualified.

Capital clubs resisted poachers

Lazio and Roma’s biggest success stories on the transfer market this summer were keeping top stars, writes Sam Wilson.

The summer transfer window is nearing its end for another year and it certainly lived up to its hype as far as Italy is concerned. Several high-profile players moved to the country, with Matthijs de Ligt snubbing the likes of PSG, Barcelona and Manchester United to join Juventus whilst Inter Milan broke their transfer record to purchase United’s Romelu Lukaku. Meanwhile, there were some eventful changes off the pitch; Fiorentina have seen a new owner take charge in the form of Rocco Commisso, whilst Inter, Juventus, Milan and Roma all changed their head coaches.
