Ballardini: 'Embarrassing Genoa'

Davide Ballardini blasted Genoa for “an embarrassing 15 minutes” that ruined their 5-3 defeat to Sassuolo.

The Grifone had taken the lead at the Mapei Stadium through Krzysztof Piatek, but found themselves 5-1 down.

“We had an embarrassing 15 minutes and if you’re going to be that distracted and disinterested, then you deserve to lose,” the Coach told Radio Rai.

Ballardini: 'Piatek complete package'

Davide Ballardini was impressed by Empoli, but even more so by Genoa striker Krzystof Piatek. “He is the complete package.”

This 2-1 victory was their first game of the season, as the Week 1 fixture with Milan was rescheduled for October 31 due to the Ponte Morandi tragedy.

The bridge, a landmark of the city, collapsed last week and took 43 lives with it.

Genoa and Samp attend State funeral

Genoa and Sampdoria players have arrived together to attend the State funerals of the Morandi bridge collapse victims, as the death toll rose to 41.

Another three bodies were recovered from the rubble overnight, two parents and their nine-year-old daughter, leaving only one person still unaccounted for.

The Liguria landmark Ponte Morandi collapsed amid a storm and possible lightning bolts, though the cause of the tragedy is still unclear.

Ballardini seeks Genoa 'quality'

Davide Ballardini has asked to see “more quality in possession” as Genoa make their Coppa Italia debut against Lecce this evening.

The third round tie is a one-off match and kicks off at Marassi at 20.15 UK time.

“It is Genoa’s duty and pleasure to target a long Coppa Italia campaign and try to go as far as possible. This is an important competition,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

The well-travelled midfielder is finding his form again at Genoa and is a manager’s dream tournament player, writes Greg Murray.

It has not been smooth sailing for Oscar Hiljemark, who captained Sweden to triumph in the Under-21 European Championship in 2015 and came to Serie A for Palermo.

He lost his way at Genoa, was loaned out to Panathinaikos, but was granted a welcome reunion with Davide Ballardini.

Hiljemark is the kind of hard-working midfielder that's needed in an intensive month-long competition like the World Cup.

‘Napoli focusing on Sarri’s future’

Genoa’s sporting director claims Mattia Perin has not joined Napoli yet because the Partenopei are ‘busy thinking about Maurizio Sarri’s future’.

Perin has long been linked with Napoli as Pepe Reina’s replacement between the sticks, but Giorgio Perinetti suggested the southerners’ business in the transfer market had been placed on hold by the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Sarri.

“The squad must be improved for next season,” he told Radio Crc.

Official: Genoa confirm Ballardini

Genoa have officially extended their contract with Coach Davide Ballardini to June 2019.

The club had seemed ready to look elsewhere, but growing pressure from players, fans and the media swayed President Enrico Preziosi.

“Genoa CFC announce the renewal of the contract with Coach Davide Ballardini and the members of his staff, Carlo Regno and Stefano Melandri, to June 30 2019.”

This means for the first time in his career, Ballardini will begin a season at Marassi.
