Tactical Analysis: Genoa 2-0 Inter

Inter were frantic and devoid of a plan, while Genoa kept their cool to soak up aimless pressure and cruise to a 2-0 win.

Words: Marcello Cossali-Francis

Inter lacked creativity and clinical finishing, but Genoa were spirited and committed in defence, which essentially, saw them over the line. That and quite the strangest own goal you’ll see this season.

Inter were without key players Mauro Icardi, Ivan Perisic and Joao Miranda, who all could have made a big difference.

Grifone needs to sharpen its claws

The last-gasp victory over Lazio was thrilling, but unless Genoa start delivering consistently in attack, Richard Hall warns it might remain a one-off.

Genoa’s last-gasp win against Lazio must simply be appreciated in the moment. The fact that Diego Laxalt had a sublime goal ruled out with help from VAR only made his bullet header in the dying embers even more special.

The victory also saw ex-Lazio forward Goran Pandev roll back the years and score against his old employers, but don’t be fooled. All the stars aligned for the Rossoblu on Monday night, but there were still enough examples on how good they could be, if they can find individuals or a collective to share the goals.

Genoa stun Lazio at the Olimpico

Genoa stunned Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, despite having a goal controversially chalked off by VAR.

Having defended resolutely for the first half, the Grifone took the lead on the break before being pegged back almost immediately by Marco Parolo.

Diego Laxalt thought he had given his side the lead again, only for the goal to be chalked off for what was judged to be a handball.

The full-back was not to be denied though, and his late header gave his side a precious win in the capital.
