Stadio Meazza 'not culturally relevant'

Inter and Milan are a step closer to getting their new stadium after the local council report ruled the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza at San Siro is ‘not culturally relevant.’

The two clubs had asked to knock down the existing structure and build a new state of the art stadium over the top, whereas the local authorities urged them to maintain the old San Siro pitch in some form or another.

Inter and Milan present new San Siro plans

Inter and Milan presented their plans for the new San Siro stadium, which would also restyle the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The joint document was created by the two rival clubs to the Municipality of Milan, with two different projects to be considered.

They were designed by the architecture groups Populous and Manica/Sportium and would essentially repurpose the existing stadium to become part of the overall project, building the new arena in what is currently the car park.

Only in Serie A: Infamous San Siro scooter

Inter fans smuggling a scooter into the stands of San Siro would've been stupid enough, but setting fire to it and throwing the vehicle over the rail was pure madness.

Words: Livio Caferoglu

The 2000-01 season will go down as one of Inter’s worst in recent memory. Out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage, thrashed 6-0 by city rivals Milan and finishing almost 25 points behind Scudetto winners Roma in fifth place, the nadir of the Nerazzurri’s negative campaign came at San Siro on May 6, when they hosted Atalanta.

Milan and Inter are currently collaborating to build a new stadium, but former Rossoneri CEO Marco Fassone has claimed the city should have two grounds.

Mayor: 'Reduced capacity Stadio Meazza'

Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala urges Inter and Milan to work with the local authorities, as a “reduced capacity Stadio Meazza would be a good solution.”

The two clubs presented their ambitious plans to knock down the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and construct a new joint arena next to it, essentially where the car park of the stadium now stands.

A vote in the local council backed plans to revamp the San Siro area of the city, but shot down attempts to eliminate the Stadio Meazza entirely.

Milan council votes to save San Siro

The City Council of Milan has voted to save San Siro, while also backing the new stadium proposal put forward by the Rossoneri and Inter.

Both Milanese clubs have a desire to vacate San Siro as they believe that remodelling the iconic stadium is too problematic and, above all, too costly.

They have released plans for a new 60,000-seater stadium in place of the current ground, but this didn't go down well with the council, which doesn't want to see the famous venue torn down.

Inter and Milan: 'San Siro only option'

Inter and Milan released a joint statement warning “the only option is a new stadium at San Siro” rather than go elsewhere or restructure the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The clubs have presented two designs for the new venue, which would be built right next to the current structure, essentially in what is now the parking lot.

Local residents and councillors have pushed for a restructuring and improvement of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, while others suggested building the new arena in the Sesto San Giovanni area of the city.

'New San Siro better than Tottenham'

The architect behind one of the designs for a new San Siro hosting Milan and Inter assures it’ll be “better than the Tottenham Stadium,” which they also planned.

The two clubs are eager to construct a new arena next to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, at which point they can then tear down the iconic structure.

They reduced the shortlist down to two designs, one with concentric rings around the stadium, while the other by architects Populous would have slats based on the Duomo di Milano and Galleria.
