Milan and Inter reject San Siro sale

Despite the Mayor offering to sell the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for €70m, it’s reported Inter and Milan still want to build a new arena.

The debate over the next step in the city of Milan continues, as the iconic structure either needs a great deal of refurbishment or will be torn down and replaced by a new stadium.

Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala announced the local authorities were prepared to sell the Stadio Meazza to the two clubs for just €70m – approximately the cost of bringing Romelu Lukaku to Inter from Manchester United.

New San Siro details emerge

New details are emerging on the stadium Milan and Inter want to build as a replacement for the Stadio Meazza, with a 60,000 capacity and cost of €605m.

According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, it would cost €45m just to knock down the iconic structure, let alone create a new one next to it in the San Siro area of the city.

It would cost in the region of €605m to create the new stadium.

The plans are still being worked out, but the idea is to have a capacity of 60,000, which can be reduced to 55,000 for particular events.

Moratti: 'Can't lose San Siro'

Former Inter President Massimo Moratti understands the need for a modern stadium, but cannot conceive of Milan without the San Siro structure.

Both Inter and Milan are eager to build their own arena, which would involve tearing down the iconic Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, but the plans on what to do and when remain extremely hazy.

“It should be sorted out straight away, so it’s only right that all the authorities, but above all the people of Milan, know what the final projects and scenarios are,” Moratti told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Atalanta squatters at San Siro

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall knows allowing Atalanta to play Champions League games at San Siro makes sense, but still feels wrong.

Perhaps it’s the decommissioning of ‘battleship San Siro’ that has triggered such contempt. What could make the news that one of the world’s greatest stadiums, is to be demolished and be rebuilt, worse? Both representatives from Inter’s Curva Nord and Milan’s Curva Sud were up in arms this week as it was announced that Atalanta would play their Champions League games in the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. For them, it is certainly salt into a very raw wound, but for Italian Football and Le Dea, it seems an absolute must.

Burning the Cathedral of Calcio

Plans to tear down San Siro are breaking Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall’s heart, as a pilgrimage to the cathedral of calcio is irreplaceable.

May 27, 2007, never for me has San Siro felt like that. Inter lifted the Scudetto after beating Torino 3-0. Still revelling in the incredible goal scored by Douglas Maicon, the party lasted six hours on the Curva Nord from start to finish. That was my idyllic moment, however, it’s only one of so many etched over almost a 15-year period of pilgrimage to Milan’s second Duomo.

San Siro third tier 'oscillated'

Authorities are keeping the third tier of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza under observation after unusual oscillations during Inter-Atalanta.

According to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, the top tier wobbled up to 5cm as the crowd jumped in the latest Serie A match.

This is not the first time the third tier, which was added for the 1990 World Cup, has oscillated to a certain degree, as the issue was spotted as far back as 2003 during a music concert by Vasco Rossi.

La Scala del Calcio

As we prepare to experience the Milan Derby at San Siro, Matthew Santangelo realises it might be one of the last at the Scala del Calcio.

The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, or more commonly referred to as San Siro, was erected nearly a century ago in the 1920s, with a string of periodic renovations since then to ensure the structure remained intact and suitable enough for modern football.

With a capacity exceeding 80,000, it is the largest ground in Italy and serves as the home of both Milan and Inter who, with their history of success and winning tradition, have turned the stadium into the hallowed ground we see today.

Scaroni: 'New Milan-Inter stadium'

Milan “are thinking of building a new stadium along with Inter” to replace San Siro, confirmed President Paolo Scaroni. “It’s important to stay in fourth place.”

Meetings between the two Serie A giants and with the local council had pointed towards creating a new purpose-built arena rather than restructuring the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Milan clubs consider ‘San Siro 2’

Milan and Inter are reportedly considering a new stadium adjacent to San Siro, which would then be demolished or converted for another purpose.

The two clubs have signed a memorandum of understanding to share a new, modern stadium and are exploring their options.

It has been thought that the most likely option is staying at the Meazza, but in recent days it has been suggested that new Rossoneri CEO Ivan Gazidis would prefer a new stadium.

Inter believe in bright young hopes

With the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Keita Balde Diao stepping up, Richard Hall felt a new sense of belief among Inter fans at San Siro on Saturday.

Inter’s fans were out in force against Frosinone, 63,645 to be precise, and they were not to be disappointed. The Nerazzurri put the agony of the previous week in Bergamo behind them and proved that they were made of much more sturdy stuff than in previous years. Under Luciano Spalletti, they are maturing into a team that not only has potential but is also starting to entertain. This is what brings the crowds out in Milan: promise and excitement and, what’s more, consistency.
