Corriere: 'Lynch mob' over racist headline

The Corriere dello Sport responded angrily to accusations of racism for its headlines, but in so doing claimed they were the victims of a “lynching.”

The controversy exploded on Thursday morning when their front page headline was ‘Black Friday’, referring to Friday evening’s Inter v Roma match and the star names, Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling.

Despite both players and their clubs pointing out this was at best “highly insensitive” and at worst outright racist, the newspaper and their editor Ivan Zazzaroni doubled down.

Corriere: 'Clubs showed solidarity'

Corriere dello Sport editor Ivan Zazzaroni implies Roma and Milan “started this chaos” around the ‘Black Friday’ headline because of interviews, while “other clubs showed us solidarity.”

The front page story about Friday’s Inter v Roma match featured Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling, so use of the term ‘Black Friday’ was seen as racist.

Lukaku: 'Dumbest headline ever seen'

The fallout from the Corriere dello Sport racist headline continues, with Romelu Lukaku calling “the dumbest I have ever seen,” while Roma and Milan ban the newspaper.

This morning’s headline was ironically for an article meant to be praising the anti-racism message of Inter striker Lukaku and Roma defender Chris Smalling being the star names in Friday night’s Serie A match.

Instead, the choice of words ‘Black Friday’ set off a firestorm of protest and condemnation.

Lukaku 'happy thanks to Inter'

Belgium CT Roberto Martinez claims Romelu Lukaku’s form at Inter is down to his relationship with Antonio Conte and that he feels “more at ease” in Milan.

Lukaku moved from the Premier League last summer, when he joined Inter from Manchester United, and has scored 10 times in 14 Serie A games so far.

His coach at Belgium doesn’t seem surprised to see him hit the ground running immediately and said the move to Inter has helped the 26-year-old.

Report: Inter want Mertens

Inter are reportedly looking to bring Napoli forward Dries Mertens to San Siro - a transfer that would link him up with Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku.

Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad claims Antonio Conte is a long-time admirer of Mertens, having tried to sign him when he was Chelsea boss.

The 32-year-old’s contract expires next summer, and it doesn’t look like Napoli will be offering him a new deal.

In case you hadn’t heard, Inter are breaking all kinds of records this season. The Nerazzurri swept aside SPAL last weekend, and in the process secured their best ever start to a top-flight campaign, winning 12 of the opening 14 rounds. They have scored at least two goals in each of their last 10 competitive matches, a stat not seen since the peak of the Roberto Mancini era at the club. In summary, Antonio Conte has got Inter purring.

Marotta: 'Market unpredictable'

Inter general manager Beppe Marotta wants to keep striker Lautaro Martinez but accepts “the market is unpredictable.”

Martinez has already scored 13 goals for Inter in all competitions, including a brace against SPAL yesterday that put them top of the table, and Marotta would like to tie down the Argentine to a better contract.

“Lautaro is a good lad. He is grateful to Inter, he is comfortable here,” he said after Monday’s Lega Serie A assembly.
