'Gigio & Alessio should lead new Milan'

Former defender Gianluca Zambrotta has claimed Gianluigi Donnarumma and captain Alessio Romagnoli must be the pillars in the future of Milan.

The World Cup winner picked up three titles during his spell with Milan, helping the club to their last Scudetto in 2010-11 and two Supercoppa Italiana.

But Zambrotta fears the rebirth of the Rossoneri could be harmed if Donnarumma and Romagnoli leaves the club.

Zambrotta: 'Italy back to the top'

Gianluca Zambrotta believes between senior, U21 and U20 teams, “Italy are on the right track to being one of the best football nations in the world again.”

The Azzurri have a 100 per cent record so far in Euro 2020 qualifying, scoring 11 goals and conceding none, including Saturday’s 3-0 victory away to Greece.

Italy also reached the semi-final of the U20 World Cup, which will be played on Tuesday against Ukraine, and are among the favourites to win the European Under-21 Championship.

Spinazzola the new Zambrotta

Versatile, attacking and confident in big games, Hasan Saiyid feels Leonardo Spinazzola can be the figure Italy have lacked since Gianluca Zambrotta.

To a casual observer, it may seem as if Leonardo Spinazzola magically materialised this March. There he suddenly was, feinting, dribbling, taking smart risks on the left side during Juve’s colossal Champions League performance against Atletico Madrid in Turin, and there he suddenly is in Coach Roberto Mancini’s squad for Italy’s upcoming Euro 2020 qualifying matches against Finland and Liechtenstein.

Gattuso has taken Milan to third in Serie A, on course for a place in next season’s Champions League, prompting praise from his former Rossoneri teammate.

“I would say there are two, on the one hand, there’s the tactical strength that he’s given the team,” Zambrotta told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Zambrotta: Gattuso like Capello

Former Milan defender Gianluca Zambrotta says he is expecting Gennaro Gattuso to emulate Fabio Capello as a Coach.

Zambrotta played alongside Gattuso for Milan and Italy, winning a Scudetto and the World Cup with the ex-midfielder, and he compared the Rossoneri’s new man at the helm to Capello, whom he is assisting at Jiangsu Suning in China.

“If you look at his preparation and attachment to these colours, it’s barely a surprise,” the 40-year-old told Gazzetta dello Sport.

On This Day: Italy 3-0 Ukraine

On this day in 2006, Luca Toni struck twice as Italy beat Ukraine 3-0 to reach the World Cup semi-final.

Having come through a nervy final group game with the Czech Republic, the Azzurri defeated 10-man Australia in the Last 16.

Fabio Grosso went down rather theatrically under Lucas Neill’s challenge, and Francesco Totti converted with the last kick of the game.

That set up a tie with Andriy Shevchenko’s Ukraine in Hamburg, and it took Marcello Lippi’s men just six minutes to break the deadlock.

Capello: Scudetti won on the pitch!

New Jiangsu Suning boss Fabio Capello insists the two Scudetti he won with Juventus in 2005 and 2006 “were won on the pitch”.

Capello will be assisted by former Juve protege Gianluca Zambrotta at Inter’s sister club in China, and he touched on the two Serie A titles that both men lifted but had revoked due to the Calciopoli scandal.

“Suning is a world-class group of great importance,” the former Milan and Roma Coach explained at his official unveiling.
