Milan council votes to save San Siro

The City Council of Milan has voted to save San Siro, while also backing the new stadium proposal put forward by the Rossoneri and Inter.

Both Milanese clubs have a desire to vacate San Siro as they believe that remodelling the iconic stadium is too problematic and, above all, too costly.

They have released plans for a new 60,000-seater stadium in place of the current ground, but this didn't go down well with the council, which doesn't want to see the famous venue torn down.

Elliott: Milan not for sale

Elliott Management insists it has “absolutely” no plans of selling Milan and that it is committed to helping finance a new stadium.

Financial expert Luca Pagni suggested yesterday that Milan’s record €145.9m losses were part of an Elliott strategy to ‘clear’ the decks for a sale.

However, a spokesperson for the firm told Affariitaliani.it when asked about a potential change of ownership: “Absolutely not.”

Inter and Milan: 'San Siro only option'

Inter and Milan released a joint statement warning “the only option is a new stadium at San Siro” rather than go elsewhere or restructure the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The clubs have presented two designs for the new venue, which would be built right next to the current structure, essentially in what is now the parking lot.

Local residents and councillors have pushed for a restructuring and improvement of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, while others suggested building the new arena in the Sesto San Giovanni area of the city.

'New San Siro better than Tottenham'

The architect behind one of the designs for a new San Siro hosting Milan and Inter assures it’ll be “better than the Tottenham Stadium,” which they also planned.

The two clubs are eager to construct a new arena next to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, at which point they can then tear down the iconic structure.

They reduced the shortlist down to two designs, one with concentric rings around the stadium, while the other by architects Populous would have slats based on the Duomo di Milano and Galleria.

Infantino: 'San Siro like Wembley'

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is torn over the future of San Siro. “There is nostalgia, but then look at Wembley Stadium.”

Inter and Milan have announced plans to tear down the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and replace it with a new purpose-built arena next to the current site.

However, there have been protests from citizens, fans and the local authorities, who would prefer a restructuring of the iconic venue.

“You have to analyse the situation carefully,” Infantino told reporters at the Festival dello Sport in Trento.

Inter-Juve set for Serie A record

Sunday’s Derby d’Italia between Inter and Juventus at San Siro is set to become the highest-grossing match in Serie A history.

Gazzetta dello Sport reports the Stadio Meazza will be fully booked when the arch-rivals face off this weekend, with over 75,000 fans expected through the turnstiles.

The showdown should therefore generate more than €6.5m in gate receipts – an all-time high for the Italian top fight.

'Council won't boycott new San Siro'

Milan mayor Beppe Sala has assured that he is fully behind the idea of a new San Siro. “I’ve decided to put aside my nostalgia and passion.”

Sala had previously been cold on the idea of Milan and Inter building a new stadium to replace San Siro, but he has now come around.

“I’m not boycotting the construction of a new stadium and I’ve decided to put aside my nostalgia and passion for San Siro because, otherwise, I wouldn’t be a good mayor,” he told ANSA.

Milan and Inter stadium concepts

There are two final designs for the new Milan and Inter stadium, one that changes colour and the other inspired by the Duomo.

The design concepts were presented in a Press conference, livestreamed this morning.

Manica/Sportium’s design includes glass skyscrapers next to the arena, which has fully covered seating areas, but no roof over the pitch itself.

The design would allow it to continue hosting music events with large screens erected in the centre, for performances in the round.
