Materazzi: Inter’s big problem

Marco Materazzi believes Inter ‘need to realise how good they are’ if his former club are to realise their potential.

Inter added to their squad heavily over the summer but have won just one of their opening three Serie A games and were drawn with Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur in their Champions League group.

“Spalletti’s team need to realise how good they are,” Materazzi, who won the Treble with the Nerazzurri in 2010, told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Materazzi: 'Croatia like Italy 2006'

Marco Materazzi praised Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic, as he believes Croatia “have something of Italy in 2006” ahead of the World Cup Final against France.

The most famous moment in Matrix’s career saw him being headbutted in the chest by Zinedine Zidane in the 2006 World Cup Final.

Until today, that was also the last time Les Bleus had been in a World Cup Final.

On this day: Italy 1-0 Australia

On this day in 2006, Francesco Totti’s controversial late penalty saw Italy past Australia at the World Cup.

The Azzurri had come through as winners of Group E, defeating the Czech Republic 2-0 in the final round to set up the meeting with the Socceroos.

Alessandro Del Piero replaced Francesco Totti in the starting line-up, and his early left-footed cross was headed wide by Luca Toni at the back post.

On this day: Czech Rep 0-2 Italy

On this day in 2006, Italy beat the Czech Republic 2-0 to advance to the Last 16 of the World Cup.

The Azzurri had beaten Ghana in their first group game, but were held to a 1-1 draw in the second, with Daniele De Rossi sent off for a brutal elbow.

The Czechs, inspired by Juventus’ Pavel Nedved, had been ranked second in the world going into the tournament, and thrashed the USA 3-0 in their first game.

However, an injury to Jan Koller robbed them of a focal point in attack and they were stunned 2-0 by Ghana in Cologne on match day two.

Materazzi: ‘Headbutt didn’t hurt…’

Marco Materazzi reveals Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt in the 2006 World Cup final “didn’t hurt me”  but “I’d have stayed on that turf all night…”

The French captain was sent off for butting the Italy centre-back, with the Azzurri going on to lift the trophy on penalties.

Despite being on the receiving end of the assault though, Matrix admits he was simply trying to ensure the red card was produced.

Materazzi: ‘Lazio favourites, but…’

Marco Materazzi believes the fact Inter know they have to beat Lazio this evening could work as an advantage.

The two teams lock horns at the Stadio Olimpico tonight in what is effectively a play-off for Serie A’s fourth and final Champions League place.

Simone Inzaghi’s team are the better placed, with home advantage and the knowledge a draw will be enough to secure their return to Europe’s premier club competition.
