Double win for Inter

Much as bitter, long-running rivalry fuels the Derby d'Italia, Richard Hall warns Inter must focus on themselves and not old enemies Juventus

Marco Materazzi often embodies the emotion and determination of Inter and this week was no different. Speaking to the Gazzetta Dello Sport, ‘Matrix’ was full of passion, but spoke with some insight that the Nerazzurri should not ignore. Inter should not focus on the Derby D’Italia fuelled with a need to avenge old rivalries, simply hoping to put pay to their Scudetto challenge, but instead should focus on the Champions League. This mentality is more similar to the way The Old Lady have looked at this fixture for years.

Materazzi: ‘Juventus cannot win’

Marco Materazzi insists “Juventus must not win” against Inter on Saturday, not least because it would derail their Scudetto hopes.

The Bianconeri are just one point ahead of Napoli at the top of Serie A, and face a Derby d’Italia against the Champions League-chasing Beneamata.

“Inter can’t miss this opportunity to take an important step toward a return to the Champions League, and really complicate the season for a historic rival like Juventus,” Materazzi told Corriere dello Sport.

Materazzi: ‘Mancini for CT’

Marco Materazzi backs Roberto Mancini for Italy CT, as long as he can “prove he’s worth everything he’s done in his career”.

The Azzurri are still without a permanent Coach after Giampiero Ventura was sacked, and Mancio is the favourite to get the job.

“A World Cup without Italy? We’ll have to absorb it,” Materazzi told RMC Sport.

“We have to start again with a new CT.

The former Nerazzurri defender was at a Nike exhibition today which showcased iconic shirts and he took the time to speak to Sky.

“A favourite for the Champions League places? Hopefully Inter,” Materazzi said.

“It would be an important step, but you can’t take anything away from what Lazio are doing, like yesterday against a great Fiorentina.

Gigi Buffon must find a way to both express his passion and calm the media frenzy that risks damaging his reputation, writes Richard Thomas.

Materazzi: ‘Gattuso underrated’

Milan boss Rino Gattuso is ‘a great Coach’ who has always been ‘underestimated,’ according to Marco Materazzi.

Gattuso has presided over an unbeaten start to 2018 in all competitions – helping the Rossoneri reach the Coppa Italia final, the last 16 of the Europa League and give themselves an outside chance of Champions League qualification.

And former Inter defender Materazzi has a high opinion of the Diavolo tactician, with the duo having been former international teammates.

‘Icardi to win Milan derby, or…’

Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi claims “Mauro Icardi or a defender” will decide Sunday’s Milan derby.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday, Materazzi also gave Inter boss Luciano Spalletti some advice over how to approach the inter-city clash.

“What must Inter do to win the derby? Do what Gattuso is doing, playing with heart, passion and competence, things that Inter have shown they have and can’t have lost,” he explained.
