No more Di Natales

Udinese don’t have Toto anymore and, as Richard Hall explains, their entire model seems to be a thing of the past.

The Stadio Friuli looked different back then, certainly not as modern but it still had atmosphere. On the March 8 2014, Antonio Di Natale was wheeling away in celebration after tapping home from close range. There was nothing special about the goal, only that it came against Milan and it would go towards his league tally of 17 for the season. Even back then the cracks were beginning to show in the ‘Udinese model’ but now in 2018, as they face Milan again, the Zebrette are a shadow of their former selves. Only now there in no ‘Toto’ to save them.

Udinese: None of us innocent

Gino Pozzo, the son of Udinese owner Giampaolo, admits everyone at the club has played a role in their plight.

Udinese fell to their 10th successive defeat on Wednesday against Napoli, leaving the Zebrette just five points above the relegation zone in Serie A with just as many games remaining - and Pozzo to insist enough is enough.

“Maybe I’ve arrived too late, but the objective now is to bring the team to safety,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Pozzo to buy Belgian club?

The Pozzo family are reportedly looking to buy Oud-Heverlee Leuven as a satellite club in Belgium to unite with Udinese and Watford.

They already own a side in Serie A and the Premier League, having sold Spanish outfit Granada last year.

According to Il Messaggero newspaper, the Pozzo family are prepared to invest again in a different League, this time the Jupiler Pro League.

The most likely candidate is Oud-Heverlee Leuven, who are currently in Proximus League – the Belgian version of Serie B.

Watford in false document claim

The Pozzo family released a statement denying they were aware of falsified bank documents, but Watford could be docked Premier League points.

Gino Pozzo, who also own Serie A side Udinese and until recently Granada in Spain, completed the takeover of the Hornets in 2014 when taking complete control from his father Giampaolo.

The English Football League has opened an investigation following allegations in the Daily Telegraph that Watford supplied false financial documents to the governing body.

Udinese losing their way

With Beppe Iachini sacked and another tough season on the cards, Richard Thomas examines where it has gone wrong for Udinese in recent years.

Udinese’s decision to sack Coach Beppe Iachini following a poor run of form was the latest sign, as if there hadn’t been enough already, that things have taken a long-term turn for the worse in Friuli.

An insipid performance in the 3-0 home defeat by Lazio proved the final straw for owner Giampaolo Pozzo and President Franco Soldati, who promptly brought about the end of the former Palermo boss’ brief Bianconeri tenure. After just four and a half months, Iachini was gone.
