Serie B goes ahead with 19 teams

The FIGC has confirmed that Serie B will go ahead with 19 teams after throwing out five appeals.

Ternana, Pro Vercelli, Siena, Catania and Novara all felt they had cases to bump Serie B back up to 22 teams, but ANSA reports the FIGC rejected their appeals on Monday morning.

The agency adds the decision by the federation’s Federal National Court also acts as confirmation that the League will be contested by 19 sides.

Serie B decision delayed

An FIGC tribunal has delayed a decision on the Serie B appeals, so the games will go ahead this weekend with 19 teams.

The second division is in chaos, as it was controversially reduced from 22 teams to 19 after Avellino, Bari and Cesena were unable to register.

Appeals have been launched by Pro Vercelli, Siena and Ternana to be readmitted, overturning a decree by FIGC commissioner Roberto Fabbricini.

Catania and Novara also want to be admitted, while Avellino claim they should have been allowed to register.

Serie B appeal to Government

An appeal from five clubs has been sent to the Italian Government in a bid to resolve the chaos around Serie B, but Virtus Entella wouldn’t sign it.

The situation is reaching critical point after a series of conflicting and contradictory legal rulings.

This chaos erupted over the summer when Avellino, Bari and Cesena went bankrupt, but rather than replace them with sides from Serie C, the FIGC and Lega Serie B opted to simply reduce the division to 19 clubs.

Serie B: Clubs win new appeal

The legal battle over whether Serie B has 19 or 22 teams this season is back on after Pro Vercelli won an appeal to suspend the ruling.

It had seemingly been resolved once and for all when the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) judging panel declared that the appeal from Pro Vercelli, Catania, Siena and Ternana was inadmissible.

However, this evening Pro Vercelli got the all-clear from the TAR tribunal in the Lazio region to suspend the CONI ruling.

Serie B returns to 22?

CONI could decide to return Serie B to being a 22 team division this evening - despite the fact two rounds of the season have already been played with 19.

Avellino, Bari, and Cesena failed to register for the new season, and rather than bringing in other teams the FIGC commissioner Roberto Fabbricini accepted a request from the Lega Serie B and ruled the season could start with 19.

The fixtures were announced, with one side getting a rest week in each round, and the season has been underway for two weeks.

Official: Macheda joins Panathinaikos

Former Italy Under-21 international Federico Macheda has officially signed for Panathinaikos.

The striker only just turned 27 last week, but the early promise of his career when leaving the Lazio youth academy to sign for Manchester United in 2007 has dissipated.

He had spells at Sampdoria, QPR, VfB Stuttgart, Doncaster Rovers, Birmingham City, Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest and most recently Serie B outfit Novara.

His contract expired in July and he was a free agent, so able to sign a three-year deal with Greek side Panathinaikos.

Serie B in chaos

Pro Vercelli’s President describes Serie B “chaos”, as it’s not clear who will replace Bari and Cesena.

The two clubs failed to register for the 2018-19 season due to financial difficulties, and will be declared bankrupt.

Provided the mayor of the respective cities can find new investors, the two clubs will start again in Serie D, while Avellino have been granted more time to come up with a guarantor so they can register.
