Quagliarella up for Puskas Award

Sampdoria and Italy striker Fabio Quagliarella has been nominated for the 2019 Puskas Award.

Quagliarella is up for FIFA’s best-goal prize, courtesy of his stunning backheeled finish against Napoli last September.

Despite initially downplaying it, the 36-year-old later described the goal as the best of his career.

He is joined on the list of candidates by ex-Serie A superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his flicked volley with LA Galaxy.

Coppa: Samp comeback in Crotone

Sampdoria completed the comeback from an early goal to win 3-1 away to Crotone, with new buy Gonzalo Maroni immediately on target.

The Blucerchiati will face Cagliari in the Fourth Round of the Coppa Italia in December.

It was Crotone who took the surprise lead just eight minutes in when a long ball over the top allowed Salvatore Molina to spring the offside trap, chest it down and beat Emil Audero.

Fabio Quagliarella’s acrobatic attempt whistled wide, as did an Ahmad Benali free header from Molina’s cross.

Sampdoria the surprise package

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall believes Eusebio Di Francesco’s Sampdoria could be the surprise package this season.

There is more to the Blucerchiati than a madcap owner. In fact, despite Massimo Ferrero’s antics, one could say he isn’t even that mad. The evidence of this was left on the pitch last term as Sampdoria finished ninth with pride.

Giampaolo: 'Formative Sampdoria years'

Marco Giampaolo thanks Sampdoria for “intense and formative years” as he takes the Milan job, while welcoming Maurizio Sarri to Juventus.

He is expected to sign on at San Siro within 24-48 hours, having terminated his Samp contract by mutual consent.

“I had three intense and formative years at Sampdoria, where I had the opportunity to work on the construction of an idea and a football school of thought,” Giampaolo said at an awards event.

Azzurri adjusted to beat Bosnia

Roberto Mancini is developing a clear Italy identity, but Elio Salerno explains the CT also made key tactical changes to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Italy maintained their 100% record in Euro 2020 qualification as they secured a 2-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in Group J, but as expected, they were made to work for it.

Following the 3-0 victory in Greece, Azzurri boss Roberto Mancini chose to make three changes to his starting XI for Tuesday night’s game. Gianluca Mancini stepped in at right back while Federico Bernardeschi and Serie A Capocannoniere Fabio Quagliarella were introduced to freshen up the attack.

Mancini: 'Italy have attacking options'

Roberto Mancini is keeping his options open in attack as Italy visit Greece in tonight’s Euro 2020 qualifier. “The key will be stopping them getting into their rhythm.”

It kicks off in Athens at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The predicted line-ups remain in the air, as the centre-forward in his 4-3-3 formation could be Andrea Belotti, Fabio Quagliarella or even Federico Bernardeschi as a False 9.

Italy balance progress and the present

The Azzurri have a generation of talented young players, but Jay Cassano observes Roberto Mancini using them judiciously in the service of immediate results.

One of the biggest problems facing the Italian national team today is that there are relatively few players in what we ambiguously refer to as a footballer’s “prime.” That age from about 27 to 31, plus a couple more years if they’re a defender.

Ferrero: 'Milan, ask me for Giampaolo'

Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero is prepared to let Marco Giampaolo go, but “Milan haven’t called me, and they ought to.”

Multiple reports are confident Giampaolo is first choice to replace Gennaro Gattuso at San Siro, although confirmation will only arrive once Paolo Maldini is appointed technical director.

Italy test new trident

Italy had their first training session today with an exciting line-up including Federico Chiesa, Fabio Quagliarella, Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi.

The Azzurri continue their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign against Greece on June 8 and Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 11.

Roberto Mancini held his first session today and the tactical experiments included a 4-3-3 formation with a very attack-minded approach.

Versatile Juventus man Bernardeschi was dropped back into midfield, a role he has played a few times at club level this season.

ADL: 'Di Lorenzo, a striker and Sarri'

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s arrival, the search for a “top level striker” and why he’d be amused by Maurizio Sarri at Juventus.

The Partenopei were gathered in Capri to celebrate Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s 60th birthday.

“Ancelotti has proved himself an exemplary travelling companion, but is also a cultured, polite and pleasant person,” De Laurentiis told Sky Sport Italia.
