SPAL beaten by Viola and VAR

VAR reached an historic milestone, as it was used to disallow SPAL’s goal for 2-1 up and instead give Fiorentina a penalty in their 4-1 victory.

The technology inevitably takes time to use, so when SPAL went on the counter to score moments after Federico Chiesa went down in the opposite box, the confusion and tension was palpable.

Petagna generations haunt Roma

Andrea Petagna scored to give SPAL their first Serie A victory away to Roma since his grandfather Francesco was their Coach in 1965.

It’s a family affair in the Eternal City for SPAL, who came full circle in a 2-0 result this afternoon.

Petagna converted a penalty before the Kevin Bonifazi header from a corner.

The last time SPAL managed to beat the Giallorossi in Rome was another 2-0 result in September 1965.

Curiously, the Coach of the Spallini that day was Francesco Petagna – Andrea’s grandfather.

Coppa: Petagna puts SPAL through

Andrea Petagna made the perfect start to his SPAL career, scoring the Coppa Italia Third Round winner against Spezia.

The former Atalanta striker was on target straight after the restart at the Stadio Picco.

It proved the only goal of the game, though Gyasi saw his effort ruled offside.

SPAL go on to face either Sampdoria or Viterbese Castrense in the Fourth Round in December.

Official: Spal sign Petagna

Spal have officially confirmed the signing of Andrea Petagna from Atalanta, on loan with an obligation to buy “under certain conditions”.

The striker was a regular in Gian Piero Gasperini’s side last season, but the arrival of Duvan Zapata left him surplus to requirements.

“Spal 2013 announces the signing, on loan with an obligation to buy under certain conditions, of the striker Andrea Petagna from the club Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio,” a statement on the club’s official website confirms.
