Gomez: 'Can't explain it'

Papu Gomez “can’t explain what happened” when Atalanta lost their Champions League all-time debut 4-0 to Dinamo Zagreb.

The Orobici were in this tournament for the first time in their history after finishing third in Serie A last season, but were given a rude awakening in Zagreb.

“It’s difficult to explain what happened,” Gomez told Sky Sport Italia.

Gomez: 'From relegation to Champions'

Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez remembers when Atalanta were fighting against relegation and it’s “extraordinary” to enter their Champions League debut with Dinamo Zagreb.

It kicks off on Wednesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) in a group with Manchester City and Shakhtar Donetsk.

“It’s exciting, a great football sensation and playing this competition for the first time is something extraordinary,” said Papu in his Press conference at the Maksimir Stadium.

Ilicic and Skrtel celebrate with Atalanta

Atalanta concluded pre-season preparations with a 9-1 victory over Serie C outfit Monza, including a Josip Ilicic hat-trick and Martin Skrtel goal.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men played their final summer friendly at the Zingonia training ground in Bergamo, which for the occasion was packed out with fans.

The Stadio Azzurri d’Italia, renamed the Gewiss Arena, is still undergoing restructuring work.

Duvan Zapata was brought down for a penalty, converted by Ilicic, then Mario Pasalic completed a counter-attack.

Papu Gomez believes Atalanta “could be a surprise in the Champions League, because we play in a different way to everyone else.”

They set a new club record by finishing third in Serie A, reached the Coppa Italia Final and will be in the Champions League for the first time ever.

Papu: Rejected Lazio & Saudis

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez has revealed that he rejected offers from Lazio and Saudi Arabia to stay in Bergamo.

Gomez marked his fifth season at Atalanta with qualification for the Champions League, and he owed much of the credit for their achievement to Coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

“Since his arrival, Gasperini has given Atalanta a winning mentality,” the forward told Sky Sport Italia.
