Biglia hits out at Papu Gomez

Lucas Biglia hit out at Atalanta captain and Argentina teammate Papu Gomez for a crunching tackle and lack of apology.

The Milan midfielder thought his World Cup participation was at risk after recovering in record time from a back fracture only to then be clattered from behind by Gomez during a 1-1 draw with Atalanta.

“During that incident, I was perfectly aware he was behind me, which is why I got back up infuriated,” Biglia told Argentine paper Ole.

Argentina flies flag for Serie A

Italy might not be at the World Cup, but there’s plenty of Serie A representation in the Argentina squad, notes Vilizar Yakimov.

Italy’s disastrous failure to qualify for the World Cup left most Serie A followers with little to look forward to in the tournament. However, some of Serie A’s biggest stars will still take part.

Throughout the years, Argentinian players have always thrived in Serie A and some of La Albiceleste’s finest talents have plied their trade in the Peninsula. The likes of Paulo Dybala, Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi are following the footsteps of legends like Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta, Hernan Crespo and Javier Zanetti.

Coppa: Buffon keeps Atalanta quiet

Gonzalo Higuain scored a precious away goal, but 40-year-old Gigi Buffon was the Juventus hero with a penalty save to beat Atalanta 1-0 in the Coppa Italia Semi-Final.

The first leg was taken very seriously indeed, as both sides fielded practically a full-strength XI. Buffon made his comeback after several weeks out with a calf injury, making his first appearance as a 40-year-old and the first in the Coppa since December 2012, but Juan Cuadrado, Paulo Dybala and Benedikt Howedes were injured. The hosts missed Leonardo Spinazzola and rested Mattia Caldara.
