Gattuso outwits Sarri's Juve

Gennaro Gattuso overcame Napoli old boy Maurizio Sarri, recording a memorable victory over old rivals Juventus in the process, writes Elio Salerno.

The form book was ripped up at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday evening as Gennaro Gattuso proved the doubters wrong by outsmarting Maurizio Sarri, sending his stale Juventus home empty handed. With Napoli struggling in the bottom half of the Serie A table and a mighty 27 points behind Juve prior to kick-off, a Bianconeri victory appeared the likely outcome. However, Gattuso’s players executed a simple but effective game plan to claim a morale boosting win.

Mario Rui: 'Sarri deserves nice reception'

Mario Rui has encouraged the San Paolo to give Maurizio Sarri a “very nice reception” when the former coach returns to Napoli as the Juventus coach.

Sarri brought some good times to the Neapolitans and left for Chelsea in the Premier League after 148 games at the helm of the Partenopei.

He returned to Italy last summer, to take over rivals Juventus, but Mario Rui goes a long way back with the coach and said he hopes he will be “welcome” on Sunday.

Sarri: 'Ronaldo such a specimen!'

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri won’t take credit for Cristiano Ronaldo’s scoring run against Roma. “Give credit to his mother for creating such a specimen!”

The Bianconeri swept through to the Coppa Italia semi-finals against either Milan or Torino with a 3-1 win, decided by Cristiano Ronaldo, Rodrigo Bentancur and Leonardo Bonucci.

Paratici: 'Pjaca close to Cagliari'

Sarri: 'Roma are better away'

Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri pointed out Roma’s away form and has revealed that he might rest Cristiano Ronaldo in the Coppa Italia. “I haven’t decided”.

Roma visit Allianz Stadium and have a poor record away to Juventus, but the coach takes nothing for granted against a “strong” Giallorossi.

That said, he admitted that Ronaldo could get some rest, but only if he didn’t feel up for the task.

De Ligt: 'I would be angry too'

Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt has revealed he understands the fans have been “angry” but claimed he will focus on “working to improve myself”.

The 20-year-old has come under a lot of pressure after his €85m move from Ajax to Juventus last summer and after starting the season as Leonardo Bonucci’s partner, he was replaced by an impressive Merih Demiral at the end of 2019.

Immobile top of Golden Shoe charts

Lazio hitman Ciro Immobile has 23 goals in just 19 Serie A games, putting him out in front for the Golden Shoe 2019-20.

The award takes into account the difficulty of each European league, calculating a points system based on UEFA coefficients.

Immobile is currently out on top with 46 points (23 goals x difficulty coefficient 2), followed by Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner on 40 (20 goals x 2).

Sarri: 'Juve mustn't defend deep'

Maurizio Sarri was not happy at Parma keeping Juventus under pressure. “I prefer to concede on the counter than spend 10-15 minutes in our own half.”
