Smalling and Mkhi conclude season at Roma

Roma will reportedly have both Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan at their disposal for the remainder of the season, even if it goes beyond June 30.

The Corriere dello Sport claims the Giallorossi have negotiated with Manchester United and Arsenal about their respective loanees and have been given the green light to keep the pair at the Olimpico until the campaign has been concluded.

With the loan deals originally expiring on June 30, both Smalling and Mkhitaryan are still expected to re-join their respective clubs after the concluded season.

Roma try to extend Mkhitaryan loan

Roma are unwilling to pay the €25m asking price for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, so reportedly hope to extend his loan from Arsenal by another season.

The 31-year-old Armenia international made the move for €3m last summer and made 17 appearances between Serie A and the Europa League, contributing six goals and four assists.

He struggled repeatedly with injuries, which is why Roma are not prepared to meet the €25m cost of buying him out permanently.

Mkhitaryan: 'Prefer Fonseca's football'

Henrikh Mkhitaryan says he is “feeling much better” at Roma and that he “prefers” Paulo Fonseca’s football to what Unai Emery practiced at Arsenal.

Mkhitaryan fell out of favour at Arsenal but had been hitting form for Roma just before coronavirus brought the season to a halt, scoring three goals and assisting two in four Serie A matches.

“When I was at Arsenal, I had different things asked from me by the coach, people were expecting different things from here,” the attacking midfielder told The Times.

Report: Roma want permanent deal for Mkhi

Roma are reportedly working hard to secure a permanent deal for Arsenal loanee Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenia international has been struggling with a series of injuries since his move to the Olimpico but has still managed to score six goals in his 13 League appearances for the Giallorossi.

A tear in the adductor muscle in late September made for a difficult start for the 31-year-old and he struggled with his fitness on his first return in November.

Mkhitaryan: 'No easy Europa games'

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was pleased that Roma got the result they needed away to KAA Gent. “There are no easy games in the Europa League.”

The Giallorossi earned a 1-1 draw in Belgium with Justin Kluivert, going through to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline.

“We only won the first leg 1-0, so it was not easy, especially as we only played three days ago, but the important thing is that we qualified,” the Armenian told Roma TV.

Mkhitaryan: 'Roma believe in fourth'

Henrikh Mkhitaryan insists that Roma “believe in fourth place” this season but they will not get carried away after the 4-0 win against Lecce on Sunday.

After a run of five games without a win, including the elimination from the Coppa Italia last month, the Giallorossi have now secured back-to-back wins and clean sheets in the Europa League and in Serie A.

They are currently three points behind fourth-placed Atalanta in the table and Mkhitaryan hasn’t given up on a place in the Champions League next year.
