Referees to hold VAR meeting

It’s expected there will be a summit between Serie A referees and Coaches, due to a series of controversial VAR incidents.

Video Assistant Referees were introduced in the Italian top flight at the start of last season, but this season there have been some contentious incidents.

An alleged foul by Kostas Manolas on Gaston Ramirez was reviewed in the Roma-Sampdoria game, but it didn’t appear to be a “clear and obvious error”.

VAR was used to review an incident where Stephan El Shaarawy’s shot hit the arm of Omar Colley.

VAR to be used in Champions League

UEFA has officially announced that Video Assistant Referees will be used in the Champions League from next season.

Serie A has had VAR for the past two seasons, and the technology was also used at this summer's World Cup in Russia.

UEFA has resisted adopting the technology, but it has today been confirmed that it will be adopted for the 2018-19 season, from the play-off stage.

VAR will also be used for the 2019 European Super Cup, Euro 2020 and in the Europa League from the Group Stage onward from 2020-21.

UEFA confirms VAR plans

Aleksander Ceferin has confirmed that there is a possibility of VAR being used in the Champions League later this season.

Ceferin initially rejected claims that VAR could feature from the Champions League quarter-finals, but the UEFA chief told Gazzetta dello Sport: “I won’t exclude it being used later this season, but for now it doesn’t look like it will.

VAR from CL quarter-finals?

It is claimed video assistant referees (VAR) could be implemented in the Champions League from the quarter-final stage this season.

ItaSportPress cites a report in The Times, which states UEFA bosses were ‘impressed’ by how VAR improved the level of officiating during the World Cup in Russia.

Although UEFA chief Aleksandar Ceferin had previously ruled out its use in the Champions League, the governing body would be ‘seriously considering’ adopting it for the final three knockout rounds.

VAR replays in Serie A stadiums

The Lega Serie A will allow VAR replays to be shown on stadium screens next season, but only after the referee has taken a decision.

The Italian top flight introduced Video Assistant Referees last season, and while the move was a qualified success, there were some complaints.

One of those is that for fans in the stadium, who don’t have access to the replays the referee sees, there are long delays where spectators don’t know what’s happening.

‘VAR has made 16-18 errors’

VAR has made ’16-18’ errors in Serie A this season, according to referee designator Nicola Rizzoli.

VAR was introduced to the Italian top flight at the beginning of the season, but the technology has only caused confusion over when it is consulted and how the footage is interpreted.

“Barring this matchday, in which I hope there haven’t been any, [VAR] has made 16-18 errors throughout the season,” Rizzoli told Sky Sport Italia.

Tare: ‘Serie A is distorted!’

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare hits out at referees - “we no longer know where the line is between mistakes and bad faith…”

The Biancocelesti have repeatedly been infuriated by the officiating this season, and the issue came up again after Ciro Immobile was denied a penalty against Cagliari.

“Enough now!” Tare fumed in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“On Sunday in Cagliari there was a double penalty on Immobile, but for [Marco] Guida he dived and he booked him for his protestations.

UEFA: VAR ‘too confusing’ for CL

UEFA President Aleksandar Ceferin has confirmed that there will be no VAR in the Champions League next season. “I still see so much confusion.”

VAR has been primarily implemented in Serie A and the Bundesliga this season, but the technology’s lack of consistency means it will remain out of the Champions League for at least another year.

“We won’t adopt video assistant referees in the Champions League next season. I still see so much confusion,” the Slovenian said at UEFA’s Ordinary Congress on Monday.

‘No VAR in Champions League’

UEFA has reportedly rejected the idea of implementing video assistant referees (VAR) in the Champions League next season.

UEFA’s Ordinary Congress took place on Monday, and Calciomercato reports the issue of VAR being used in the 2018-19 Champions League came up.

The technology has been experimented in Serie A and the Bundesliga this season, but the website notes “it hasn’t convinced” European football’s governing body.

VAR made its debut in Serie A at the start of the 2017-18 campaign but has yielded mixed results.

Gasp: Strange things with VAR

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini claims “strange things are happening” with Serie A’s use of video assistant referees (VAR).

The controversy surrounding VAR in Serie A took another turn on Sunday as Patrick Cutrone’s goal in a 2-1 win for Milan against Lazio was allowed to stand, despite the ball appearing to hit his arm.

“Yesterday was unfortunate, but certain mistakes have been repeated for a few Sundays now,” the Coach told Radio Anch’io Sport.
