Semplici: 'Atalanta win raised morale'

SPAL coach Leonardo Semplici says their win against Atalanta raised morale and that he’s “happy Kevin Bonifazi has returned.”

SPAL welcome Bologna to the Paolo Mazza tomorrow, with kickoff at 14:00 GMT. You can read the match preview here.

The Ferrara-based side caused a major upset when they beat La Dea away from home on Monday, and Semplici says the morale in the group has lifted.

Official: Bonifazi rejoins SPAL

SPAL have officially re-signed Kevin Bonifazi from Torino, announced the club.

Bonifazi had been linked with a return to the Ferrara-based side for a number of weeks.

It was reported yesterday that a deal was close between the two sides.

Now it has been made official, with SPAL releasing a statement on the club’s website.

Bonifazi has joined his old side on loan with an obligation to buy for €12m.

Gasperini: 'More mental than physical drop'

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini states that there was more of a “mental drop than physical” against SPAL.

La Dea were expected to beat the struggling side, especially as they were at home and with SPAL struggling to score goals.

However Gasperini’s men lost 2-1 on Monday night, but says they will start again against Torino.

Ranieri: 'No Samp arrogance after Brescia'

Sampdoria boss Claudio Ranieri says he doesn’t believe his players became too confident after their 5-1 win against Brescia. “I think we were a little too open against Lazio.”

Ranieri’s men beat the Rondinelle 5-1 two weeks ago, but then were demolished by the Biancocelesti last week by the same scoreline, but the former Roma boss doesn’t believe his players became arrogant.

Report: SPAL closing in on Bonifazi

SPAL are, according to Sky Sport Italia, one step away from bringing Torino defender Kevin Bonifazi back to Ferrara.

The 23-year-old was a key member at the Paolo Meazza when SPAL ended their 49-year long absence from the top division in 2016-17.

He also spent last season on loan at SPAL and now Sky Sport Italia reports that he will move back for the third time on a loan deal with an obligation to buy for €12m.

He will reportedly sign a five-year contract with the Biancazzurri, who are currently 18th in the League and one point away from safety.

Serie A Week 21 referees

The referees for Serie A week 21 have been announced, and Gianpaolo Calvarese has been given the derby match between Roma and Lazio.

The 43-year-old will be the match official when the Giallorossi are set to play their home game against the Biancocelesti

He has been at the helm of 21 Lazio matches so far and they have come out as winners in 15 of them, only losing three times with Calvarese in charge.

Roma also have experience with the Teramo resident, as he has led the Giallorossi out of the tunnel 17 times.

Toloi: 'A warning sign'

Rafael Toloi has admitted that Atalanta “made a lot of mistakes” against SPAL on Monday and said the Dea will use it “as a warning sign”.

Atalanta lost their second match in five days against SPAL and have now gone three games without a win since their 5-0 triumph against Parma.

The centre-back claimed the Orobici weren’t “careful” enough against a “desperate” SPAL, but is determined to score points against Torino.

Semplici: 'SPAL needed that win'

Leonardo Semplici said SPAL “certainly needed a game like this against a great team like Atalanta” after the shock 2-1 victory in Bergamo.

The club from Ferrara not only came back from an early Josip Ilicic goal to get their first Serie A win away to Atalanta since 1966, they also clawed themselves off the foot of the table.

Now SPAL have 15 points, alongside Brescia, leaving Genoa bottom on 14.

Gasperini: 'Every game a battle'

Gian Piero Gasperini concedes Atalanta weren’t at their best in the 2-1 defeat to SPAL, but “it’s a very difficult and finely-balanced league this year.”

This was an entirely unexpected defeat to the club propping up the table, especially as the last two home games ended 5-0 against Milan and Parma.

Josip Ilicic had given the Bergamo boys an early lead, only for Andrea Petagna and Mattia Valoti to turn it around.

Petagna: 'SPAL always like this now'

Andrea Petagna scored against his old club Atalanta yet again and urged SPAL to “play every game with this mentality now.”

The striker equalised after a Josip Ilicic opener, then Mattia Valoti scored an impressive solo effort for the shock 2-1 win at the Gewiss Stadium.

“I left a piece of my heart in Bergamo and will always be grateful to the club and the fans, but we really did need to win tonight. There was no other choice,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
