New record in coronavirus recoveries

There were 369 deaths related to COVID-19 in Italy over the last 24 hours, but also 94 left intensive care and 8,014 were given the all-clear.

The pandemic response is now in Phase Two, as the curve has flattened considerably over the last couple of weeks.

Today’s death toll has jumped up to 369, taking the total to 29,684, but this is also because of older numbers that hadn't been registered as COVID-19 cases, 222 of them in Lombardy.

Most Serie A teams return to training

Most Serie A clubs are returning to individual training this week, but as there is no agreed medical protocol, Milan are reportedly resisting COVID-19 swab tests until they are authorised.

The Government’s scientific committee had rejected the first version of the medical protocol, calling it ‘insufficient,’ so a new and updated list will be discussed tomorrow.

Meanwhile, individual training sessions are allowed throughout Italy as of this week, although the clubs are careful to call this ‘voluntary’ rather than work.

Tommasi: 'Players waiting for protocol'

Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi warns the medical protocol and timing of the Serie A season remains in the air after training resumed.

Many clubs returned to work this week after the Government changed the guidelines on solo training within a centre, as long as social distancing was maintained.

However, a final decision on the medical protocol and whether the Serie A season can resume should be made this week.

Capello: 'World Cup style retreats'

Fabio Capello suggests a World Cup-style 40-day training retreat for all Serie A clubs, as three southern cities open up to hosting fixtures away from the COVID-19 hotspots.

Most teams returned to training this week, albeit keeping social distancing measures and undergoing intensive testing with both swabs and blood samples.

Sassuolo open to neutral venues

Sassuolo are open to the idea of the remaining Serie A games being played in the centre and south of the country. “Behind closed doors, all stadiums are the same.”

The proposal is gaining traction, as the COVID-19 cases are practically eradicated around the country, except for seven regions in the north.

“I try not to read the comments from Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora, as he tends to change his mind soon after anyway,” Sassuolo director general Giovanni Carnevali told Radio 24.

When the Minister for Sport hates football

Italy’s Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora has made an absolute hash of handling the post-pandemic football response in Italy, writes Susy Campanale.

It’s frankly unusual to see club Presidents accusing the Minister for Sport of “hating football,” but Vincenzo Spadafora has made the entire post-coronavirus situation infinitely more difficult than it needs to be. Which I guess is the traditional role of an Italian politician, so in that sense he is very much on brand.
