Viola fan Semplici eyes victory

SPAL boss Leonardo Semplici admits he is a Fiorentina fan but is eyeing an ‘important’ victory over his boyhood heroes.

The Biancazzurri Coach supported the Viola as a boy and today faces the Florence side for the first time as a tactician.

“It’s a very important game for us,” Semplici, whose newly promoted team have taken four points from their last two Serie A matches, told his pre-match Press conference.

“Fiorentina have great qualities and a lot of desire to get points.

Fiorentina lose pair for SPAL

Fiorentina are without Cyril Thereau and Milan Badelj for their trip to SPAL on Sunday afternoon.

Coach Stefano Pioli has fitness issues to deal with, as striker Thereau and midfielder Badelj are out of action.

Rocchi to referee Rome derby

Gianluca Rocchi has been confirmed as the referee for this weekend’s Derby della Capitale.

Roma and Lazio meet for the first time this season on Saturday evening, with both sides riding high in the table. Click here for a match preview.

Today the AIA has confirmed the referees for Week 13, with Rocchi assigned to the Rome Derby.

The official has proved controversial for the Giallorossi in the past, famously giving Juventus a contested penalty in Turin in a 3-2 defeat.

Serie A announces winter dates

Serie A has announced its winter dates for this season, with matches spanning across Christmas and New Year.

It comes after Serie A pledged to scrap its winter break before the start of the campaign, instead opting for a week off between January 7 and 20.

Games will also be played on January 6, which marks the traditional Italian celebration of Befana - similar to the phenomenon of Santa Claus.

Atalanta fined €20,000

Atalanta have been fined €20,000, after shrapnel from a firecracker injured a photographer.

The Orobici drew 1-1 with Spal on Sunday evening, after Remo Freuler was shown a red card.

He’s been banned for one match, but the club has also been hit with a hefty fine.

The Lega Serie A found that fans “launched a firecracker over the dividing fence, the blast from which caused injury to a photographer due to shrapnel, without further injury”.

‘SPAL are doing well, but…’

SPAL general director Andrea Gazzoli praises the club’s start to life in Serie A but thinks they have deserved more points.

The Biancazzurri, playing in the top flight this season for the first time in 49 years, have taken nine points from their first 12 games of the campaign to sit sixteenth in the table.

“We have done well in the opening matches,” Gazzoli told TMW Radio.

“But we haven’t taken as many points as we have deserved.

Wk12: Depth charge

Few expected Roma to be the paragons of squad rotation, but Napoli lack understudies and Milan are missing ideas, writes Susy Campanale.

Strength in depth is often cited as the key component for a successful team in modern football. With the fixture list so densely-packed, being able to rest, chop and change without losing quality is essential. Napoli having problems with this was entirely predictable, but few expected Roma to be the paragon of squad rotation virtue.

Semplici and SPAL regrets

SPAL Coach Leonardo Semplici was left with regrets after a 1-1 draw against 10-man Atalanta. “We could’ve taken three points.”

Luca Rizzo’s splendid solo effort cancelled out a Bryan Cristante opener, but the visitors had great chances in the final minutes with Federico Viviani and Mirco Antenucci.

“The performance was excellent and it was the only way we could get a result here,” Semplici told Rai Sport.
