Race is on to fill Buffon's gloves

Gianluigi Buffon will soon be ready to hand over the Italy gloves, but Richard Hall wonders if it’ll be to Gigio Donnarumma or Mattia Perin?

Back in September, ex-Milan star Demetrio Albertini challenged Gianluigi Donnarumma to match Gigi Buffon’s achievements. “He is definitely ready to replace Buffon, I believe he is a great goalkeeper and a brilliant talent”.  Albertini is not alone in his presumption: Buffon retires, Donnarumma takes his place, one child prodigy to another. Staunch VAR supporter Paolo Mazzoleni has been confirmed as the referee for Saturday’s Serie A showdown between Juventus and Milan.

Mazzoleni gave an interview praising Serie A’s decision to implement VAR only a month ago, and his faith in the technology may have made him seem like a safe pair of hands for the big game in Turin.

Meret: 'Buffon deserves Italy gloves'

SPAL and Italy Under-21 goalkeeper Alex Meret has no desire to push Gigi Buffon off the international scene. “He still deserves to be first choice.”

Buffon was expected to hang up his gloves after the 2018 World Cup, but Italy’s failure to qualify seems to have changed his plans and he started last night’s 2-0 friendly defeat to Argentina.

While Gianluigi Donnarumma and Mattia Perin are waiting to take over, Meret has been given the Under-21 role.

The closer we get to the end of the season, the more hidden dangers lurk in every fixture. It’s no coincidence that SPAL tripped Juventus up and re-opened the Scudetto race, because they’re precisely the type of team that can will continue to cause upsets.
