The other Scudetto race

While the race at the top of the table is still alive, Richard Hall outlines the fascinating battle to stay in Serie A, a reward that feels like a Scudetto.

Napoli’s last gasp win against Chievo may have kept alive the closet title race in the major European leagues, but it also drew attention to something else. Whilst the Partenopei and Juventus tussle for supremacy at the top of the table, the battle to merely stay in Serie A is a tight as ever.

Ballardini: 'Genoa must secure safety'

Davide Ballardini won’t discuss his contract until Genoa have secured their Serie A safety, which is a step closer after a draw with Sampdoria.

The Grifone managed to avoid losing a fourth consecutive meeting with their city rivals and kept a clean sheet.

“Genoa were organised and we could’ve done better going forward, but were a little too timid,” confessed the Coach on Mediaset Premium.

Semplici: 'SPAL deserved win'

SPAL Coach Leonardo Semplici insists they “deserved more” from a 1-1 draw with Atalanta, especially after a soft equalising penalty.

“I think the penalty incident was pretty clear, so I’ll let you comment on it,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are a little upset, because we deserved something more. It’s a pity the crossbar denied us the victory after such a good performance.”

Gasperini: 'A fair result'

Gian Piero Gasperini maintains the 1-1 draw with SPAL was “a fair result” and not something Atalanta should underestimate either.

A late Marten De Roon penalty wiped out the Thiago Cionek diving header at the Stadio Mazza.

“This was not a setback at all. It’s not easy to get a result in Ferrara nowadays,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Atalanta share spoils with SPAL

Atalanta converted a soft penalty in the final stages to hold SPAL 1-1 in Ferrara, but the relegation battlers extend their unbeaten run to five rounds.

The Spallini confirmed their current good form and deserved more from the game, but Federico Viviani thumped the crossbar and repeatedly tested Etrit Berisha.

Thiago Cionek had opened the scoring for the hosts with an acrobatic diving header on Viviani’s free kick, but it was cancelled out late on when Filippo Costa nudged Papu Gomez in the back and Marten De Roon converted the spot-kick.

Fabbri for Roma-Fiorentina

Michael Fabbri will referee Fiorentina’s trip to Roma, as the officials for Week 31 are announced.

The Giallorossi are all-but out of the Champions League after last night’s 4-1 defeat to Barcelona, so now turn their attention to qualifying for the competition again.

It’s a tough test this weekend though as the Viola come to the Olimpico, and the AIA has announced that Fabbri will be the man in the middle, with Marco Guida on the VAR.

Ballardini sees tight battle

Davide Ballardini believes the race to avoid relegation will go down to the wire after Genoa were held 1-1 by 10-man SPAL.

It was a very controversial result, as SPAL went behind to an extremely dubious penalty that also saw Francesco Vicari sent off just 28 minutes in.

“We were generous, in a good and a bad way. We tried very hard, but also gifted our opponents too many chances and spaces,” the Grifone Coach told Rai Sport.
