Coronavirus death toll in Italy at 5,476

The death toll in Italy for people who contracted Coronavirus is now 5,476, an increase of 651 over 24 hours, but there is hope they are over the peak and numbers are dropping.

Every day at 18.00 local time, the authorities give an update on the figures from the last 24 hours in the Peninsula.

On March 22, there are a total of 5,476 people who have died after contracting COVID-19, an increase of 651 since March 21.

Coronavirus 'might've mutated' in Lombardy

Italy, and in particular Lombardy, has overtaken China as the country with the most Coronavirus deaths. “We don’t understand why it’s so aggressive. The virus might’ve mutated.”

The pandemic has ground Italy to a standstill with over 4,000 deaths and experts warn we have not yet even reached the peak in the Peninsula.

Over the last 48 hours, 1,420 people died in Italy after contracting COVID-19, the vast majority of them in the Lombardy region (3,095).

Cellino: 'Let Lazio have title, this is the plague'

Brescia President Massimo Cellino insists the 2019-20 Serie A season is over due to the Coronavirus. “If Lazio want the Scudetto, let them have it. This is the plague.”

The entire country is in shutdown, as last night the Government announced even more restrictive measures, shutting down all non-essential businesses to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

It has killed over 4,000 people in Italy, so Cellino hit out at those who want to resume training next week, above all Lazio and Napoli.

There's nothing quite like Calcio

Football Italia programmes on Channel 4 made Adam Summerton fall in love with Calcio and he remains enthralled by the unique madness that surrounds Serie A.

It’s the early to mid-nineties, a Sunday afternoon, I’m sat cross-legged with muddy knees in front of Mum & Dad’s small Hitachi TV – the smell of Sunday roast is drifting through the house. I’m just back from playing for my boys team and I’ve been drawn to the living room by a TV theme tune that provoked the same excited smile in me then, that it does even now.

“Campionato, di Calcio, Italiano…“ And then, what so many of us thought for years was “Go Lazio!” but was, in actual fact, “Golaco!”

'No fans at games until October'

An epidemiologist in the Italian task force warns “it’s probably going to be impossible for crowds to attend football games before October.”

The ambitions to get Serie A matches back on track for May 2 now seem increasingly unlikely, as another 793 people died over the last 24 hours in Italy.

“We need to be clear with people, but without terrorising them,” epidemiologist Pierluigi Lopalco told La Repubblica.

Hypotheses for the new Serie A calendar

Yesterday’s conclusion to postpone the European Championship was good news for the possible conclusion of Serie A and the Coppa Italia. Here are the different hypotheses suggested in Italian media.

Euro 2020 became Euro 2021 yesterday and solved some of the implications faced by the European Leagues currently suspended due to the Coronavirus emergency.

The hopes of a fair conclusion to the League has been boosted by UEFA’s decision and Serie A might be able to continue as normal from Week 26.

Tommasi: 'Maybe Serie A in May'

Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi warns “it’s clearly impossible to start playing in April, so if all goes well, we can resume in May or June” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Italy has more cases than any other nation in the world except for China, where the illness was first registered, as the death toll now stands at 1,809.

There were another 368 deaths over the last 24 hours in Italy, despite the country being on lockdown.

Another 368 deaths from coronavirus

Another 368 people have died over the last 24 hours in Italy after catching the coronavirus, taking the total death toll to 1,809, with 1,672 in intensive care.

The illness shows no signs of slowing down, as experts warn we have not yet reached the peak, just over three weeks into the crisis.

The lockdown measures will only begin to really show an improvement over the next few days.

Latest figures released by the Italian Government paint a horrifying picture and make very clear why football had to grind to a halt.

Transfer market moved by coronavirus?

The coronavirus pandemic is transforming the entire football calendar, which could also mean the transfer market opening and closing later too.

All the major European leagues are shut down while the crisis takes hold in this continent, while football in China and America has also ground to a halt.

It’s increasingly likely that Euro 2020 will be postponed in order to allow domestic leagues, the Champions League and Europa League to conclude by the end of June.

New Serie A calendar worked out

The most likely plan to get Serie A finished in time for June 30 would be to resume May 2, then play nine weekends and three midweek games along with five dates for European cups.

Multiple sources including La Repubblica and La Gazzetta dello Sport outline what would be a new calendar once the coronavirus pandemic has allowed football to return.

The official suspension of Italian football only runs to April 3, but with 11 players testing positive already and the country still under lockdown, that seems fanciful at best.
