Virologist: 'Realise extent of Coronavirus problem'

Professor Roberto Burioni hopes seeing professional athletes and coaches test positive for Coronavirus can represent “a step forward in realising the problem” the world faces.

There have now been two Serie A players who tested positive for Coronavirus – Juventus defender Daniele Rugani and Sampdoria forward Manolo Gabbiadini – along with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, while players at Leicester City, Manchester City and Chelsea are in self-isolation.

Serie A to resume on May 3?

Serie A will not resume until May 3 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, claim reports, using the time gained by the cancellation of Euro 2020 to finish the season.

Multiple sources including L’Equipe suggested today that UEFA would inevitably postpone the European Championships, which were due to kick off on June 12.

The opening game would’ve been in Rome between Italy and Turkey.

South American World Cup qualifiers suspended

Serie A players will not be called to travel to South America this month, as the World Cup qualifiers have been postponed, along with the Copa Libertadores games.

It was not clear how players currently in Europe would be treated when travelling for international duty, particularly those from the hardest-hit areas by the Coronavirus such as Italy and Spain.

“Following consultation with CONMEBOL, FIFA has decided to postpone the upcoming South American qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 as follows,” read a statement.

Preziosi: 'Can't create new rules'

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi warns changing the way relegation, promotion and the Scudetto are assigned due to the Coronavirus outbreak is “not possible.”

Serie A, B and C have been suspended until at least April 3, so if Euro 202 does go ahead as planned on June 12, there won’t be time to finish the season.

Different options are being considered, including play-offs for the top four and bottom four, or freezing the table as it stands.

Malago' 'stunned' UEFA still going

CONI President Giovanni Malagò is “stunned” UEFA haven’t stopped the Champions League, Europa League or Euro 2020 yet amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Numerous sporting tournaments all over the world have been suspended after the pandemic started to spread around the globe.

“Common sense and responsibility showed us the way from the start. We could do nothing but stop,” Malagò told GianlucaDiMarzio.com.

Meanwhile, some Europa League games are playing this evening, including matches with crowds present.

Spadafora slams 'football's inability to decide'

The coronavirus outbreak has caused controversy in Serie A with Presidents and Ministers involved in public discussions about the decisions made by the government.

Official: Rugani has Coronavirus

Juventus have confirmed that Italy international defender Daniele Rugani has tested positive for COVID-19, known as the Coronavirus.

In a statement released on Wednesday evening, the club announced that Rugani has been diagnosed with the Coronavirus, but currently has no symptoms of the illness.

“The footballer, Daniele Rugani has tested positive for Coronavirus-COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” read a statement.

FIGC explain Scudetto play-off

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina explains his plans for a four-team Scudetto play-off if the Serie A season cannot be finished on time due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The Government has ordered the suspension of all sporting events until April 3, as players cannot have their health and safety guaranteed in these circumstances.

“We hope that the season can be concluded as planned, because if we do resume on April 3, there are certain windows to make up for these postponed games,” said Gravina.

Another 168 Italian Coronavirus deaths

The number of Coronavirus cases in Italy has jumped forward again with an extra 168 deaths over the last 24 hours, taking the total fatalities to 631.

It is becoming evident why the Government announced restrictions reserved for the ‘red zones’ had to be applied all over the country to slow the spread of the respiratory disease.

Italy ordered a lockdown on all sporting events, urging everyone to travel only for emergencies, until April 3.
