Serie A work to get fans back in July

As the coronavirus pandemic in Italy continues to ease, it’s reported Juventus President Andrea Agnelli proposed partial reopening of Serie A stadiums.

The Coppa Italia is due to return around June 13 with Serie A fixtures from June 20, but behind closed doors.

At the same time, theatres, cinemas and open-air concerts are going to begin slowly coming back to the Peninsula, which leads some to ask why football stadiums should be treated differently.

Transfer window in Sep-Oct?

The summer transfer window for the 2020-21 season will run from September 1 to October 5, according to reports in Italy.

With domestic seasons urged to finish by August 4 so that the Champions League and Europa League can be completed in August, the entire football calendar has been transformed by the coronavirus pandemic.

It is increasingly likely that each club and individual player will have to renegotiate deals that are due to expire on June 30, whether they are loans or contracts, to avoid chaos in July and August.

Juventus-Lazio on July 20?

It’s reported Serie A kick-off times will be decided according to location, avoiding early games in the south, while Juventus-Lazio could be saved for Monday July 20.

Serie A returns on June 20, but the dates and kick-off times will be drawn up in tomorrow’s meeting.

The Players’ Association has repeatedly warned it will not accept any kick-off before 17.00 local time in the peak of summer, so the starts are likely to be 17.00-15, 19.15 and 21.30.

Tommasi: 'Need later kick-off times'

Players’ Association President Damiano Tommasi has urged Serie A to follow La Liga by scheduling summer games late at night, while he’s ‘perplexed’ by the Coppa Italia plan.

The Lega Serie A will work out the calendar on Monday, with the tournament resuming on June 20, while the Coppa Italia is meant to have the semi-finals on June 13-14 and the Final on June 17.

“This is about ensuring health and safety, so I hope the issue of kick-off time won’t become a problem,” Tommasi told Rai Sport.

Serie A matches every day

When Serie A resumes on June 20, the idea is to have a game on every single day at seven different kick-off times.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, the fixtures will be spread out to ensure the television pay-per-view companies and clubs are happy.

They must also avoid early afternoon kick-offs, as the Players’ Association (AIC) has repeatedly refused to play in the heat of an Italian summer during June and July.

In order to get the calendar completed by August 2, they would therefore have to play a match every day.

Players' Association: 'No afternoon games'

The Players’ Association again reiterated they will not accept Serie A matches played in the early afternoon during June and July.

The fixtures will return from June 20 and a packed remaining fixture list means games on almost every day, but the issue remains of when to stagger the kick-offs.

“Playing at 16.00-16.30 in certain periods of the summer becomes a problem not just for the cities in the south, but the north too,” AIC vice-president Umberto Calcagno told Radio Punto Nuovo.

Gravina: 'Serie A Plan C and alternative formats'

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina confirms they could ‘consider alternative formats’ should the 2020-21 Serie A season start later than September 12, while defining Plan C for this term.

The three-month lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic forced the European championships to be postponed, while the Coppa Italia is set to resume from June 12-13, followed by Serie A from June 20.

With the Champions League and Europa League planned for August, when will the 2020-21 Serie A season begin?

Serie A plans for crowds to return

As the pandemic curve continues to fall in Italy and dates given for games, plans are being worked on to bring fans back to the stadiums too.

Italy now has the second most deaths in Europe related to coronavirus, having been overtaken by the UK, and most new cases are localised in the Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria regions.

With that in mind, and restaurants allowed to reopen with social distancing measures, Serie A are also making plans for how fans can get back into the stands.

Balzaretti set for SPAL?

Former Roma and Italy defender Federico Balzaretti is reportedly set to become SPAL’s next sporting director.

SPAL are looking for a new SD after Davide Vagnati moved to Torino earlier in the month, but Calciomercato.it claims they have found their man.

As per the website, Balzaretti is in ‘absolute pole position’ to take over from Vagnati, ticking the boxes of a ‘young, confident and available’ executive.

The ex-Juventus and Palermo full-back helped Italy finish runners-up at Euro 2012 and subsequently signed for Roma.

Spadafora: 'I was angry'

Italy’s Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora claims the resumption of football represents ‘an important signal’ for the country.

Serie A has set a date for the resumption of Serie A and will start again more than three months after the interruption of 2019-20 but Spadafora still crosses his fingers to avoid further complications down the line.

“It’s an important signal because the country is starting up again,” Spadafora told Tg5. “Sport and football become protagonists in this sense.
