Ilicic: 'The illness changed me'

Atalanta and Slovenia star Josip Ilicic confessed his mystery illness “changed me. I realised football isn’t everything in life.”

It has never been entirely clarified what he was suffering from over the summer, but it was reportedly a bacterial infection of the lymph nodes.

He was in and out of hospital, on various drips and antibiotics until the right treatment was found.

“In those two months on antibiotics, I realised football isn’t everything in life,” Ilicic told the official Atalanta website.

Handanovic underappreciated

Everyone at Inter is up for debate at the moment and Richard Hall notes that includes goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

“As for Samir Handanovic, I'd start with an appointment to get his eyes tested. He needs to work on his mentality to stay focused for 90 minutes." (Sandro Mazzola)

Official: Fiorentina sell Mlakar

Fiorentina have officially sold Jan Mlakar to Slovenian club NK Maribor, but will receive 50 per cent of any future transfer.

Skomina ref for Napoli-Shakhtar

Damir Skomina of Slovenia will be the referee for Napoli’s Champions League showdown with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

It kicks off at the Stadio San Paolo on Tuesday at 19.45 GMT.

This is a must-win game for the Partenopei, as otherwise they are out of the running for a place in the Round of 16.

Skomina is no stranger to Napoli, as he already officiated their 2-1 victory against Manchester City in 2011-12 and the 3-1 loss to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last season.

Ilicic: 'Never worked so hard!'

Josip Ilicic admits he’s never worked so hard as with Atalanta, but it’s paying off, even if he feels bad for fellow Slovenian Jasmin Kurtic.

The former Palermo and Fiorentina midfielder has found a new lease of life in Bergamo this season.

“I was really not accustomed to that and it was tough to deal with,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport of Gian Piero Gasperini’s summer training camp.

“However, I am reaping the rewards of that labour now. My legs are going at full speed.”
