Cavani leads Uruguay to victory

Slovenia appoint Sampdoria legend

The 49-year-old, who spent five years at Doria before retiring in 1994, replaces Slavisa Stojanovic after he resigned.

Kek: Slovenia have an advantage

Slovenia boss Matjaz Kek believes his side will have an advantage when they meet Italy tonight because his players know Serie A very well.

Italy can take a big step towards qualifying for Euro 2012 with a win in Ljubljana, but past results suggest it won't be easy for Cesare Prandelli.

"People who think Italy are no longer a super power in football are wrong," said Kek. "Many Slovenes are convinced that it will be an easy game. That's a mistake.

Kek: 'Italy a football super-power'

Slovenia manager Matjaz Kek believes his side will be particularly inspired against “football super-power” Italy.

The teams go head-to-head in their Euro 2012 qualifier on Friday evening in Ljubljana.

“These challenges really motivate teams, so bring on Italy,” said the manager.

“We know that we are hosting a side that has won the World Cup four times and I'd call them a football super-power in terms of tradition and world class players.”

Zahovic: 'Slovenia will win easily!'

Slovenia legend Zlatko Zahovic has been bruising in his assessment of the Italy squad. “You've only got two or three good players.”

Italy: Slovenia call peninsula stars

There are eight peninsula-based players in the Slovenian squad for next week's Euro 2012 qualifier against Italy.

The two sides go head-to-head in Lubjana on Friday evening and Coach Matjaz Kek named his squad for the big game.

They include eight players who already ply their trade in the peninsula between Serie A, B and Lega Pro.

Venue for Slovenia-Italy named

Italy's Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovenia will be played at the Stozice Stadium on March 25.

The Slovenian FA have formally announced the venue for this Group C fixture.

It will be hosted by the city of Ljubljana and their Stozice Stadium on March 25.

As preparation for that clash, Italy will play a friendly against Germany in Dortmund on February 9.

The Azzurri are currently top of Group C with 10 points from four games, followed by Slovenia on seven.
