Roma thank Smalling and Zappacosta

Roma CEO Guido Fienga has thanked Chris Smalling and Davide Zappacosta on behalf of the Giallorossi for their ‘commitment to the club’s project’.

Smalling and Zappacosta arrived on loan from Manchester United and Chelsea respectively last summer.

The English centre-back Smalling established himself in the starting line-up under Paulo Fonseca, but most of Zappacosta’s season in Rome was ruined by a cruciate ligament injury.

Roma return Zappacosta to Chelsea

Roma are expected to send Davide Zappacosta back to Chelsea following a disappointing loan spell.

The 28-year-old right-back struggled with injury and managed just seven Serie A appearances throughout the season, contributing one assist.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the emergence of Bruno Peres since the lockdown pushed Zappacosta even further down the pecking order at the Stadio Olimpico.

Zappacosta’s loan had initially been only until January, but it was extended for another six months, plus the remnants of the post-COVID campaign.

Zappacosta: 'Hope to stay at Roma'

Davide Zappacosta is still only on loan from Chelsea, but is in no rush to leave Italy. ‘I hope to remain at Roma, especially to prove what I can really do.’

He turns 28 next month and his experience in the Giallorossi jersey was reduced to just one 12-minute substitute appearance in August 2019.

That’s because he suffered a calf strain, followed by a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

“I really hope that I can remain at Roma for many reasons,” Zappacosta told Sky Sport Italia.

Report: UEFA won't allow Zaniolo comeback

Even if Nicolò Zaniolo were to recover from injury, UEFA will reportedly not allow Roma to register the attacking midfielder for the Europa League.

Zaniolo was excluded from the list of players eligible in the UEFA tournament after suffering an injury in January and was then ruled out for the rest of the season.

But the forced break could mean the Italy international would be back in time in the event of a resumption and the recovery of football seems to be about 40 days away.

Report: Roma want to keep Zappacosta

Roma are reportedly prepared to negotiate with Chelsea to keep Davide Zappacosta at the Olimpico for another season.

Zappacosta has been through a nightmare of injuries since he arrived on loan last summer, initially struggling with a calf injury, before he ruptured his Cruciate Ligament in October 2019.

Despite only playing one game for the Giallorossi, the Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolò Schira has reported that the right-bac would like to stay in the Italian capital.
