Italian Supercup confirmed for January 20

The Italian Supercup will go ahead between Juventus and Napoli at the Mapei Stadium on January 20, confirms Serie A chief Luigi De Siervo.

There had been reports Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis wanted the fixture postponed until May, even though it is the meeting between the 2019-20 Coppa Italia and Scudetto winners.

“It was just a provocation,” assured De Siervo to reporters.

Juventus-Napoli Supercup on Jan 20

The Italian Supercup will be played between Juventus and Napoli on January 20 at Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium and renamed the PS5 Supercup.

The event was confirmed by the Lega Serie A alongside Sony Interactive Entertainment Italy this evening.

It is traditionally the clash between the Serie A winners and Coppa Italia holders, played on neutral turf.

Usually this is at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, but as it’ll probably be behind closed doors anyway, the venue is moved to the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia.

Lazio the real power in Rome now

Lazio have grown both on and off the field in recent years, as Susy Campanale sees them rivalling Roma to become the leading light in the Capital.

The Lazio motto in recent years has been La Prima Squadra della Capitale – the first team in the Capital. This refers to the fact they were founded before rivals AS Roma, but have historically always been considered the smaller club, in terms of fanbase, success and influence. However, things are changing in the Eternal City.

Bentancur banned for three games

Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been banned for three games following his red card in the Italian Super Cup.

Bentancur was sent off in the final minute of Juve’s 3-1 defeat to Lazio yesterday.

This evening, the FIGC’s disciplinary committee decided to issue him with a three-match suspension.

One game is related to his two yellow cards, while the other two are as a result of him berating the fourth official.

That means he will miss the Bianconeri’s fixtures against Cagliari, Roma and Parma to open 2020.
