WC Player Profile: Blaise Matuidi

In a France squad with so many young guns and bright prospects, Blaise Matuidi brings valuable experience, writes Anthony Barbagallo.

Raiola: 'French criticise heroes'

Agent Mino Raiola feels Alphonse Areola, Paul Pogba and Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi are excessively criticised in France.

With the World Cup in full swing, Raiola spoke to RMC Sport about some of his clients in the news, including Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper and Napoli target Areola.

“I think that Areola is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He has improved a lot and showed PSG what he can do. He has a great future ahead of him.

Napoli: 'Juve players offensive'

Napoli released a statement slamming Juventus players for “shameful and offensive” behaviour during their Scudetto celebrations.

The Bianconeri lifted the Serie A trophy along with the Coppa Italia today and then went on an open bus tour around the city.

During this event, some players including Blaise Matuidi and Douglas Costa made live Instagram videos that caught some distasteful banners.

There was a shirt that read ‘Napoli ****’ but above all cut-outs of coffin lids in Napoli colours with Lorenzo Insigne’s name on it.

Matuidi: ‘Juventus are proud’

Blaise Matuidi says Juventus are “proud of what we did” against Real Madrid, despite going out of the Champions League.

The Bianconeri lost 3-0 to the holders in Turin, but had turned the tie around at the Bernabeu and were 3-0 up in injury time.

However, Medhi Benatia conceded a penalty which was converted by Cristiano Ronaldo, sending Juve out of the competition.

“I think everyone saw our great commitment in the Champions League, even if we are disappointed by the elimination,” Matuidi told Juventus TV.

Juve damage had been done

Controversial penalty call aside, Juventus dug themselves an avoidable hole with their first leg performance, argues Matthew Santangelo

Juventus’ heroic efforts in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid came up short in the end, as a controversial penalty ruling in the dying moments saw Cristiano Ronaldo bury the decisive goal.

In the aftermath, the Bianconeri and fanbase pin-pointed the official’s decision to award Lucas Vazquez a penalty as the main reason they are going home, but it is hard to argue their first leg performance made the overall goal of advancing much harder than it needed to be.
