'Everyone wants Piatek, but...'

Genoa’s sporting director has ‘accredited many scouts and directors’ who want to watch Krzysztof Piatek but insists ‘our fans will enjoy him until June’.

Piatek’s run of 13 goals in just eight games for Genoa has seen him linked with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but while Giorgio Perinetti accepted the striker was attracting interest, he made it clear the Grifone were not ready to sell up.

“Piatek is unlike anyone else I’ve worked with,” he told Tuttosport.

The saddest summer

The 2018 World Cup has concluded and Italy fans like Giancarlo Rinaldi found it an oddly empty experience watching from the outside.

The family group chat buzzed only occasionally. We set it up to share our thoughts during the last European Nations and kept it alive for the joy and desperation that only following the Azzurri can provide. Throughout the World Cup in Russia, however, it sat as an all-too-often-silent reminder of Italy's failure to qualify for the first time in a generation or two.

On this day: Germany 0-2 Italy

On this day in 2006, Italy beat Germany 2-0 in the World Cup semi-final, in one of the best matches in modern times.

The Azzurri had beaten Australia and Ukraine in the knockout stages, but faced a daunting task in Dortmund against the hosts.

Marcello Lippi’s men had the first chance of the game, but Jens Lehmann smothered the ball at Simone Perrotta’s feet after a clever pass from Francesco Totti.

Bernd Schneider should have put Die Mannschaft ahead, but he fired over Gianluigi Buffon’s crossbar.

Khedira: ‘Couldn’t sleep after Korea’

Germany midfielder Sami Khedira calls his World Cup performances “inexplicable” especially as “I had probably the best season of my life” at Juventus.

Khedira played in both matches they lost, while he was dropped for their solitary win over Sweden.

“None of us players reached the tournament in top condition, but I don’t want to criticise my teammates,” Khedira told Bild.

World Cup: Sweden sweep through

Sweden knocked Italy out of the World Cup play-offs and now they have eliminated holders Germany after a 3-0 victory over Mexico.

Both sides in this game go through to the Round of 16 after a bizarre group stage, which saw Mexico win its first two matches and yet risk elimination on goal difference.

However, South Korea’s shock 2-0 victory over Germany – with an offside decision overturned in stoppages using VAR and Manuel Neuer caught in the opposite penalty area – ensured both Sweden and Mexico could celebrate.

World Cup: Germany crash out

Defending champions Germany crashed out of the World Cup, after a shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea in Kazan.

Die Mannschaft are the fourth of the last five world champions to fail to get out of the group at the next tournament, after France in 2002, Italy in 2010 and Spain in 2014.

Joachim Low’s side went in to the match on the back of a dramatic last-gasp win over Sweden, so knew they just had to avoid defeat to have a chance of making the Last 16.
