‘Milan must be football’s capital again’

Ex-Inter striker Jurgen Klinsmann says “the city of Milan must go back to being the capital of football” and describes Italy’s World Cup no-show as a ‘disaster’.

Italy failed to qualify for their first World Cup in 60 years after their playoff defeat to Sweden, and Klinsmann felt it served as a lesson for the Azzurri.

“Italy? Their non-qualification was very sad, but it’s proof that you can never relax in football,” he told Corriere della Sera.

Can to stay at Liverpool in January

Reports in Germany suggest Emre Can won’t leave Liverpool in January, so if he’s to join Juventus it’ll be in the summer.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to the Bianconeri, and general manager Giuseppe Marotta has admitted that they’re interested.

With Can’s contract expiring at the end of the season it was even suggested that he could arrive in Turin for a cut price fee in January.

Del Piero: Calciopoli an ‘atomic bomb’

Alessandro Del Piero has described Calciopoli as “an atomic bomb”, the effects of which are still being felt in Italian football.

Juve were infamously demoted to Serie B for their role in the refereeing scandal 10 years ao, but Del Piero claimed it also led to football in Italy ‘collapsing’ and other countries moving ahead.

“It was like an atomic bomb: our football broke down,” the former Bianconeri attacker told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Italy climb in FIFA rankings

Italy have climbed above England in the latest FIFA World Rankings - despite failing to reach the World Cup.

However, FIFA has today published its latest world rankings, with Italy climbing one place to 14th, leapfrogging England who dropped three places.

“We need a project for the next 10 years,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Khedira persuading Can to Juve?

It is reported that Sami Khedira is hoping to persuade Liverpool’s Emre Can to join him at Juventus.

The duo are currently away together on international duty as Germany begin their preparations for next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

According to Tuttosport, the Old Lady are hoping their current midfielder, who has been at the club since 2015, will persude his 23-year-old international teammate that his future lies in Turin.

Can is currently in the last year of his contract at Anfield and looks increasingly unlikely to sign a new deal.

Khedira v Buffon on VAR

While Gigi Buffon wants VAR in the World Cup play-offs, Juventus teammate Sami Khedira calls it “the death of football.”

The debate over the Video Assistant Referee technology continues to rage on during its debut season in Serie A, though it will be used in the 2018 World Cup next summer.

“VAR is a good thing, but not the way it has been implemented. It needs better regulations,” Khedira told reporters in Germany.
