Clubs & refs to meet for VAR

Players and coaches will meet referees on November 19 to scrutinise the performance of VAR in Serie A.

The meeting was confirmed by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina on Tuesday, which he and referee designator Nicola Rizzoli will chair at a hotel in Rome.

Also attending will be match officials, coaches and captains of Serie A clubs, plus members of the Press.

It comes after some controversial incidents involving VAR this season, thus making a summit necessary to help foster some clarity on how the technology is used.

Insigne: 'Napoli apologise to fans'

Lorenzo Insigne apologised to Napoli fans after their 2-1 defeat to Roma. “We know that we can do better,” but continued to protest VAR decisions.

The Partenopei are sliding further away from the top spots and even the Champions League places with a run of poor results.

“We apologise to the fans, as we know that we can do better, but sometimes there are incidents like the ones on Wednesday that influence us,” Insigne told Radio Kiss Kiss.

VAR 'lacks clear protocols'

Retired referee Paolo Casarin and former FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio claim VAR is being misused because there are “no clear protocols.”

The technology has caused a great deal of controversy, most recently with several incidents on Wednesday night, infuriating Napoli, Roma and Genoa.

“The referees have the power to make decisions, they have to use VAR, it’s an instrument that is there to help them,” Tavecchio told Radio Punto Nuovo.

Conte: 'Lost confidence in VAR'

Inter boss Antonio Conte admits he has lost “confidence” in VAR this season but insists the technology is still ‘important” for football.

VAR was completely ignored for flash points in Napoli-Atalanta and Roma-Napoli midweek, while some felt it could have been used before Juventus’ match-winning penalty against Genoa on Wednesday.

"It is not being used in the same way by everyone," Conte said at a Press conference.

Refs ruin San Paolo spectacle

A wonderful game of football between Napoli and Atalanta was sadly overshadowed by yet more refereeing controversy, leaving Giancarlo Rinaldi to chew over the disappointment.

If anyone thought technology was going to cut away the controversy from Italian football, they were sorely mistaken. On a night that should have been about two of the brightest realities of Serie A, we ended up with our painfully-familiar query. To VAR or not to VAR?

Balotelli furious with Dessena injury

Mario Balotelli has expressed his fury after the VAR did not intervene before Brescia teammate Daniele Dessena was stretchered off.

Dessena was in tears as he left Brescia’s 0-0 draw with Fiorentina last night on a stretcher, risking a double break in the right leg he broke four years ago.

However, the incident came about after a collision with Erick Pulgar, who looked to catch his opponent’s ankle.

Rizzoli: 'Six errors with VAR'

Refereeing designator Nicola Rizzoli admits “the first two-three Serie A rounds were unsatisfactory,” including six errors despite using VAR.

Rizzoli spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the opening seven games of the season, which has seen a surge in penalties awarded for handball.

“The first two-three Serie A rounds were unsatisfactory in terms of refereeing performance, but then we got back on track. The change in the rules also created some difficulties for us in the early games.
