Conte: 'VAR challenges pointless'

Inter coach Antonio Conte has come out against the idea of VAR challenges. “There were situations that left those watching a little perplexed.”

The debate has been raging over the last few days about use of VAR and the FIGC offering to experiment the use of ‘challenges’ in the same vein as tennis.

Gasperini: 'VAR has failed'

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini joined the debate over VAR, claiming the technology “has totally failed and ended up creating even more doubts than before.”

The use of the Video Assistant Referee has sparked further controversy, with the likes of Napoli, Milan and Fiorentina protesting it wasn’t used enough.

This week, the FIGC wrote to FIFA putting itself forward as willing to experiment a new system giving coaches VAR challenges, much like in tennis.

ADL: 'Napoli could sue referees'

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis won’t rule out suing referees and the FIGC for damages in future. “An official who won’t view VAR is committing a sporting crime.”

The patron spoke to the Corriere dello Sport after a series of controversial incidents in recent weeks, which prompted the Italian authorities to suggest introducing a VAR challenge, similar to in tennis, where coaches are allowed to request limited on-field reviews.

Ranieri: 'Samp built for 4-3-1-2'

Sampdoria boss Claudio Ranieri says his side were "built to play in a 4-3-1-2," and that the resentment towards referees in Italy "is an ugly thing."

Collina: 'Goal is to not need VAR'

Former referee Pierluigi Collina has claimed that the match officials must make decisions “as if VAR didn’t exist” and said it should work like a “parachute”.

The chief refereeing commissioner for FIFA turns 60 today and spoke to the Gazzetta dello Sport about the purpose of the new technology.

“The referee must decide as if the technology didn’t exist,” Collina told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “The goal is to not need VAR because the decisions are correct and that’s why we work through the preparation.

Lecce: 'Problem with VAR rules'

Lecce President Saverio Sticchi Damiani understands Napoli’s frustration with VAR after the 3-2 result at the San Paolo. “There is a problem with the rules.”

The Salentini emerged 3-2 winners, but Napoli were furious when Arkadiusz Milik was booked for simulation, even though his ankle was caught.

It’s reported, but not confirmed, that the referee refused to view it again on the pitch-side monitor, despite the VAR urging him to reconsider.

Napoli: 'Unacceptable Milik card'

Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli called the referee’s yellow card for Arkadiusz Milik and refusal to view it on VAR “unacceptable.”

The incident occurred during Napoli’s 3-2 home defeat to Lecce, when the result was still 2-1 to the visitors.

Milik went over in the box, flailing somewhat after Fabio Lucioni made contact with his ankle, and was booked for simulation.

Platini: 'Against VAR from day one'

Former UEFA President Michel Platini is still opposed to VAR. “I said it from day one, football cannot be arbitrated by video.”

Platini was speaking to Il Corriere dello Sport on an array of issues and was asked for his opinion on VAR, which has drawn criticism across Europe.

“I said it from day one, I didn’t keep it to myself, I declared my opposition to technology, especially if it’s used in this way,” Platini told Il Corriere.
