Semplici: 'Spal believed to the end'

Leonardo Semplici celebrated a thrilling 3-2 victory on Spal’s first Serie A home game for 50 years. “We believed to the end.”

The Ferrara-based club had a 2-0 lead and risked throwing it away when Udinese fought back for 2-2, but a stoppage-time Luca Rizzo curler proved decisive.

Perotti: 'Why was VAR not used?'

Roma forward Diego Perotti was furious, but above all confused, after VAR was not used on a “clear penalty” against Inter.

The Giallorossi were 1-0 up when Milan Skriniar appeared to trip Perotti, but although this is the kind of incident Video Assistant Referee technology was introduced for, it was not even consulted.

Inter went on to win the game 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Buffon frustrated by VAR

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon is increasingly frustrated with VAR in Serie A. “It takes too long and it’s turning into water polo.”

The Bianconeri have experienced this more than any other side so far in this revolutionary season, as in two games they had two penalties awarded against them and one in favour.

EDF: 'Roma deserved to win'

Eusebio Di Francesco admits Roma “lost our shape” to allow Inter counter-attacks, but “we were great for 70 minutes and deserved to win.”

The Giallorossi had taken the lead through Edin Dzeko and rattled the woodwork three times, but Mauro Icardi’s brace and a Matias Vecino tap-in secured the 3-1 Inter victory.

Allegri: 'VAR will take time'

Juventus Coach Max Allegri warned “we all need a period to adapt” to VAR technology after two controversial calls in the Genoa game.

The Bianconeri had a penalty awarded against them that was offside and one ruled in their favour that seemed too close to be considered voluntary handball.

“Fortunately, the lads did well to bring home the victory, but when it comes to VAR it will take a little patience. We all need a period to adapt,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

Bologna break Benevento hearts

Benevento were heartbroken to see a last-gasp equaliser ruled offside using VAR, as Godfred Donsah’s solo effort gave Bologna victory.

It was a chaotic first ever Serie A match at the Stadio Ciro Vigorito and the atmosphere was pumped up for this domestic debut.

Bologna had a series of injury problems and Mattia Destro missed a sitter before Donsah scored a coast-to-coast goal running from inside his own half.

Benevento poured forward and repeatedly tested goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

Rizzoli: ‘More calm with VAR’

Nicola Rizzoli says Video Assistant Referees brought “great calm” this weekend, but admits “some mistakes were made”.

The VAR review system was debuted in Week 1 of Serie A and had a mixed debut, with praise for several correct decisions but an error which saw Torino have a goal disallowed.

“I’d like to point out a very positive aspect which shouldn’t be discounted for anything,” designator Rizzoli said in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

Mixed debut for VAR

Video Assistant Referees were used for the first time in Serie A this weekend, but perhaps unsurprisingly it hasn’t stopped controversies.

In the opening game of the season, Cagliari were awarded the first-ever VAR penalty in the Italian top flight, with Gianluigi Buffon saving Diego Farias’ spot kick.

Just before half-time though, Paulo Dybala latched onto a fantastic first-time through ball by Miralem Pjanic, before firing the ball into the top corner.
