Rosetti: 'VAR uniformity is utopian'

Roberto Rosetti explained how VAR will be used in the Champions League from the Round of 16. “Pure uniformity is a utopian vision.”

UEFA head of referees Rosetti held a Press conference today in Rome to present the change and discuss how it will be used.

Nobody happy after Roma-Milan

Roma and Milan both feel they could’ve had more than a point, writes Matthew Santangelo, but poor officiating was again centre-stage.

Roma and Milan entered Sunday evening’s pivotal clash at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome looking to gain something different.

Gennaro Gattuso’s men have been defensively sound over a prolonged stretch and, more recently, feeding off the January acquisitions of Lucas Paquetá and Krzysztof Piatek. Clinching a Coppa Italia semi-final berth with a commanding 2-0 win over Napoli midweek meant the red and black approached a trip to the capital feeling pretty good about their chances to climb up the table after Inter fell to Bologna hours prior to kick-off.

Chievo vent fury at VAR 'inequality'

Chievo President Luca Campedelli was livid after the 4-3 defeat to Fiorentina. “What’s the point in VAR if you make decisions willy-nilly?”

The controversial loss saw Emanuele Giaccherini’s goal disallowed because Sergio Pellissier had a toe on the penalty area line when the goal kick was taken, then VAR was not consulted after Pellissier seemed to be barged over by German Pezzella for a spot-kick.

Serie A goes Info-VARs

Social media campaigns like #JuveOut serve only to obscure the real issues in Serie A, writes Gaby McKay.

Last week, following the Supercoppa between Juventus and Milan, the hashtag #JuveOut began trending in Italy.

The social media campaign appears to have been started by an Inter fan in the wake of the Bianconeri’s controversial win in Jeddah. “I’m trying to launch a hashtag which will serve to organise a widespread protest for a country which loves football and can no longer tolerate certain tricks: #JuveOut,” Interismo Cosmico wrote. “We ask Serie A to remove Juventus from our league”.

Gattuso: 'Higuain did have a fever'

Gennaro Gattuso was irritated at officials after Milan lost the Supercoppa to Juventus and insisted Gonzalo Higuain had a fever, but wouldn’t discuss the Chelsea rumours.

Cristiano Ronaldo got the only goal in Jeddah with a glancing header, although Franck Kessie was later sent off via a VAR review for his stamp on Emre Can.

“We have to compliment the team, as I said in the Press conference we had to climb a mountain and we tried,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

De Zerbi doubts VAR call

Roberto De Zerbi is not convinced by the disallowed Sassuolo goal in a 2-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Napoli. “It’s difficult to judge.”

It was still 1-0 at the Stadio San Paolo when Manuel Locatelli found the back of the net, but the equaliser was revoked after a VAR review suggested handball in the build-up.

“It’s difficult to judge and referees can make mistakes too,” the Coach told Rai Sport.
