RAI chief: 'Juventus control VAR'

In a bizarre rant, new director of Rai 2 Carlo Freccero has accused Juventus of “occupying all of VAR” and “manoeuvring” the sport.

It was an unexpected turn of events during the presentation press conference of the man in charge of decision-making at the Italian equivalent of BBC2, a State-run broadcaster.

When asked if he would try to bring more football coverage back to RAI, who have the rights to the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup, as well as some Champions League games, his response was unusual.

Infantino: No going back from VAR

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino says there is no going back from VAR. “I wouldn’t abandon it for anything in the world.”

VAR is considered the next great innovation in world football after it was successfully rolled out in Serie A and at the 2018 World Cup, among other Leagues and competitions.

“The VAR was a winning experience, something that I wouldn’t abandon for anything in the world,” said Infantino at the Dubai International Sports Conference.

Ferrero: 'VAR is like cinema'

Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero complained VAR is “making live football more like going to the cinema. Referees will lose their authority.”

The club owner is a movie producer, but was unhappy with some of the decisions made in a 2-1 defeat to Juventus on Saturday.

“It’s true we all wanted VAR to be introduced, but it was meant to be a corrective for big errors, a way of helping the referee,” Ferrero told news agency ANSA.

Pioli: 'Fiorentina demand respect'

Stefano Pioli warned Fiorentina “demand respect, as we were denied a clear penalty” in the 0-0 draw with Genoa.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time we are left with regrets,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We had a strong hour and can do better, but unfortunately we were neither precise, nor fortunate. Having said all of that, we demand respect. We are Fiorentina and want to be treated the same way as everyone else.

Allegri: 'Neither handball a penalty'

Max Allegri “wouldn’t have given either of the two penalties” in their 2-1 win over Sampdoria and wants the Champions League for Juventus in 2019.

It was another contentious and fiery victory, with two debatable penalties for handball – one apiece – and a last-gasp Riccardo Saponara equaliser disallowed for a tight offside.

“We created many scoring opportunities against a very good Samp side,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

Giampaolo: 'Morally a 2-2 draw'

Marco Giampaolo was furious after Sampdoria’s late equaliser against Juventus was disallowed. “Morally, it ended 2-2, and their penalty was a gift.”

The Blucerchiati had drawn level with a Fabio Quagliarella spot-kick after Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener, but CR7 converted his own penalty.

Riccardo Saponara’s stunning curler in stoppages was ruled offside after a VAR review.

‘Frosinone deserved more’

Marco Baroni believes his Frosinone “could have won” against Milan, and questions the VAR intervention which denied his side a goal.

The Canarini drew 0-0 in today’s early kick-off, and had a goal disallowed by the video assistant.

“I thought [Marco] Guida’s call was the right one,” Baroni said in his post-match Press conference.

“Instead there was the VAR intervention. We have to accept it, even if we’re disappointed, with a performance like that we could have won.

'VAR doesn't work for Genoa!'

Domenico Criscito is ‘happy and proud’ to be back at Genoa but claims ‘VAR doesn’t seem to work, especially in our last few games’.

Genoa appeared to pull off a coup when they re-signed Criscito from Zenit St Petersburg last summer, but the defender’s first season back has been marred by two changes of Coach and what the club perceive as refereeing decisions going against them.

Big drop in Serie A spot-kicks

Many thought the introduction of VAR would increase the number of penalties awarded in Serie A, but instead there have been 25 fewer than last season.

Although the technology was already in effect in the 2017-18 campaign, it has been honed by officials and made more efficient.

Opta statistics show that after 17 rounds last season, 70 penalties had been given in Serie A.

At the same stage of the 2018-19 campaign, there have only been 45 spot-kicks awarded, a drop of 25.
