Capocannoniere Edinson Cavani scored his 20th goal of the season to defeat Roma, but insists “Napoli are not thinking about the Scudetto.”

The Partenopei consolidated second place with tonight's 2-0 victory at the Olimpico, their first win here since 1993.

“It is a sign that the team is united and wants to challenge for something important,” the Uruguayan told Sky Sport Italia.

“We work day after day to prepare for these games and deserved the victory this evening.

Mazzarri: 'A big step forward'

Walter Mazzarri is still refusing to talk about Napoli's Scudetto bid, even though “this was a big step forward in quality” to beat Roma.

The Partenopei had not conquered the Olimpico in 18 years before this evening's 2-0 result, decided by an Edinson Cavani double, consolidated second place.

“We certainly couldn't know beforehand that we would've put in such a performance,” confessed the Coach.

Ranieri: 'Napoli played better'

Claudio Ranieri could only give credit to Napoli for tonight's result. “They played better than we did and even those on the bench were working hard.”

Roma's Scudetto hopes are now over after a 5-3 defeat to Inter and this 2-0 home loss.

“We played against a side where all XI work hard, even those on the bench were working,” said the Coach.

“We only had one chance in the first half when it was still goalless, then the game was in Napoli's hands and they played better than us.

Roma have failed in their efforts to overturn Philippe Mexes' ban from playing Saturday's Derby del Sole against Napoli.

He has already served one match, missing Roma's 5-3 defeat to Inter last Sunday, but had hoped to be available again for this weekend's contest with Napoli.

Roma have an emergency in defence as Nicolas Burdisso is also suspended.

"It'll be a nice game," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday. "Cavani is in a moment of extraordinary form where he scores with every touch of the ball.

"However, we certainly won't start the game as a beaten side."
