Matavz to join Napoli in June

Napoli will sign Groningen striker Tim Matavz in June, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Initially it had looked as though the 22-year-old would arrive on deadline day.

However, a few details weren't sorted out in time and the deal has been postponed.

It's thought that a transfer worth €7m will eventually go through at the end of the season.

Matavz is among the top scorers in Holland this season with 12 goals to his name.

Mazzarri: 'Napoli learn from defeat'

Napoli crumbled at Chievo and wasted the chance to close on leaders Milan. “We have to learn from this defeat,” said Coach Walter Mazzarri.

The Partenopei could've closed the gap at the top of the table to just two points with a win this evening, but fell 2-0 at the Bentegodi.

“It was a bad day and too many players didn't perform the way they usually do,” sighed the tactician.

“We knew that Chievo would make this a very athletic and intense encounter, putting pressure on us to then go on the counter.

Mazzarri: 'Napoli can close the gap'

Walter Mazzarri has praised Napoli for their work in the January transfer window ahead of the trip to Chievo. “We can close the gap on the top sides.”

The Partenopei are clear in second place and could stage a genuine Scudetto push after bringing in Giuseppe Mascara and Victor Ruiz.

“We are strong and in second place, so I am happy with the way the club is operating with logic and consistency,” said the Coach.

Cavani speechless after hat-trick

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani was speechless after scoring his fourth hat-trick of the season for club and country.

The 23-year-old Uruguay international was the Man of the Match in Napoli's 4-0 victory over Sampdoria on Sunday.

"I am really happy. I almost don't believe it," he said. "I don't know if this is reality or not.

"However I believe that there are more important things than winning the Capocannoniere crown.

Napoli to bring in Matavz

Reports in Italy suggest Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis tied up a deal to sign Groningen striker Tim Matavz.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands that Napoli have agreed to pay €7m for the 22-year-old Slovenia international.

Matavz is among the top scorers in Holland this season with 12 goals to his name.

He will become Napoli's fourth signing of the January transfer window and perhaps the most high profile along with Espanyol centre-back Victor Ruiz.

Mazzarri fears Coppa backlash

Napoli need a result against Sampdoria to stay in second place, but Walter Mazzarri is concerned “the Coppa Italia extra time will take its toll.”

The Partenopei crashed out of the quarter-finals this week after an epic tussle with Inter, decided only on penalties.

“Clearly the Coppa Italia extra time will take its toll both mentally and physically in some sense, so I will probably rest a few of my first picks,” said the Coach.

Mazzarri impressed with Cavani

Walter Mazzarri praised hat-trick hero Edinson Cavani, but continues to ignore Napoli's Scudetto chances.

“I feel more relief now, as three days ago I was upset when we went out of the Coppa Italia on penalties,” smiled the Coach after a 4-0 thrashing of Sampdoria.

“I don't think about the table, as all I want to do is focus on training my players as best I can.

“We have set some solid foundations, kept the core of the side and are building on what we already achieved last season.”

"I turned down an €8m offer for Ogbonna from Napoli which included a bonus of another €2m which would have been easily attainable," Cairo noted.
