Commisso: 'Did refs threaten me?'

Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso continues to criticise “arrogant” Juventus vice-president Pavel Nedved and referees. “If that was a threat, we’ll respond.”

The 3-0 defeat in Turin on Sunday sparked controversy, largely because of the second penalty awarded for a Federico Ceccherini challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur.

Nicchi: 'Refs disgusted by Commisso'

President of the Referees Association Marcello Nicchi said officials are “to use his own term, disgusted” by Fiorentina patron Rocco Commisso’s comments.

The Viola patron ranted furiously on live television after his team lost 3-0 to Juventus, protesting that the second penalty should not have been awarded.

The referee did go to view it on the VAR on-field monitor, but stood by his original decision that Federico Ceccherini had fouled Rodrigo Bentancur.

Nicchi: 'More VAR transparency'

Referees chief Marcello Nicchi has pledged to create a point of contact, which allows the most controversial VAR calls in Serie A to be “reported daily”.

'De Ligt handball never a penalty'

Referees chief Marcello Nicchi insists Matthijs de Ligt’s handball “was never a penalty” and urges fans to “stop coming to games” if they think otherwise.

De Ligt drew controversy during Juventus’ 2-1 win against Bologna on Saturday as his clear handball in the box went unpunished, but Nicchi made it clear both the referee and VAR had applied the rules correctly.

Referees’ Association President Marcello Nicchi insists those responsible for racist abuse should be “thrown in jail,” but it is not up to the official.

'VAR helps repair injustice'

Serie A begins its third season with VAR, as Nicola Rizzoli and Gianluca Rocchi explain it should be used to “help repair injustice, not do the refereeing for them.”

The technology was used in the latter stages of the Champions League, then in the World Cup, Copa America and Women’s World Cup, prompting irritation and confusion from many fans and pundits.

Italian football was the first to introduce VAR as standard in its top flight and 2019-20 will be the third campaign with this system.

Refs could explain decisions

Referees Association President Marcello Nicchi suggests officials could explain their decisions after games and club Presidents could watch matches together in the VAR booth.

The introduction of the new technology has provided a few teething problems, particularly during the Copa America and Women’s World Cup, although Serie A is already getting accustomed to it.

Discussing plans for the 2019-20 campaign, Nicchi had some suggestions for the future.
