World Cup: Swiss neutralise Selecao

Brazil were made to pay for slack defending and sluggish finishing, as Switzerland neutralised them after Philippe Coutinho’s stunning opener.

With Argentina drawing, Germany losing and France stuttering to a victory over Australia, it was up to the Seleçao to make their debut in this tournament, but ran into many of the same problems.

There were several Serie A faces on show, including Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Inter defender Joao Miranda, Milan full-back Ricardo Rodriguez, plus Udinese’s Valon Behrami and Blerim Dzemaili of Bologna.

Coutinho: Inter spell ‘difficult’

Barcelona new boy Philippe Coutinho admits his spell with Inter was ‘difficult’ and “would’ve died” without the support of his family.

Coutinho was just 16 when he signed for Inter, but the attacker made just 46 appearances at San Siro and has since become Barca’s record purchase after five successful years with Liverpool.

“I started to realise that I’d turn professional when I signed my first contract with a European club at the age of 16, Inter, but I was very young,” he told Barca TV.

Strama: 'Inter had to sell Coutinho'

Andrea Stramaccioni reveals what prompted Inter to sell Philippe Coutinho to Liverpool for €13m five years ago. “We had to balance the books.”

The Brazilian found fame at San Siro as a very young man, leaving for Anfield in January 2013, but only five years later completed a transfer worth at least €120m to Barcelona.

“I am not surprised by Coutinho’s move, as Phil has improved a lot in the Premier League, and above all playing for Brazil, so he deserved a top club,” former Inter Coach Stramaccioni told Panorama magazine.

Cairo: €100m cheap for Belotti

Torino President Urbano Cairo claims Andrea Belotti’s €100m release clause “will be low if he goes back” to scoring goals at a prolific rate.

Belotti stayed at Torino last summer, with no clubs prepared to meet Cairo’s €100m valuation of the striker, and the patron [pictured, right] believes Philippe Coutinho’s €160m transfer to Barcelona makes the Italy international relatively cheap.

“I’m happy to have kept him because it was a kind of pact, which he also made with our fans,” he told Rai Radio.

Pirlo: Coutinho worth €160m

Former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo claims Barcelona are right to pay €160m for Philippe Coutinho. “If Virgil van Dijk is worth €80m…”

Barca finally agreed a deal to sign Coutinho on Saturday, but the sum they will hand over to Liverpool is only surpassed by the €222m that Paris Saint-Germain spent on Neymar last summer.

“Other than the crazy prices, the price of Coutinho is in line with the prices of today,” Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia.

Deulofeu wants Inter but…

Gerard Deulofeu is reportedly happy to join Inter, but Barcelona will only let him leave if they sign Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.

The Nerazzurri are looking to strengthen their squad in January, but Financial Fair Play concerns mean they can only do loan and swap deals this month.

They have been heavily linked with a move for Deulofeu - though it’s not clear if he can actually leave Barça this month - and Tuttomercatoweb reports the winger is keen to return to Italy.

Branca: ‘Inter had to sell Coutinho’

Former sporting director Marco Branca insists Inter had to sell Philippe Coutinho for budgetary reasons - “no-one doubted his quality”.

The Brazilian arrived for around €4m and was sold to Liverpool for €12.5m, but now he looks set to move to Barcelona for a fee which could be as much as €150m.

“Nobody at Inter doubted his quality, even if when you arrive in Italy at 18 it’s normal you can experience some difficulty,” Branca explained to La Stampa.

Inter to make money off Coutinho

Inter will make some money if Liverpool go through with their €150m sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

The transfer is imminent and has been in the works for several months, but they managed to stall the Brazilian until now.

It’s reported the price will be €110m plus another €40m in performance-related bonuses.

Inter bought a young Coutinho from Vasco da Gama in 2008 for just €3.8m and sold him to Liverpool, following a loan spell at Espanyol, for €13m in January 2013.
